Searching for nose art/markings of Gus' Pup - 05/05/2007 08:44:49 PM ( #1 )
My grandfather, Walter Wise, flew on Gus' Pup, and even through looking through countless online archives, his personal photographs and 487th paraphernalia I have been entirely unable to locate the nose art and complete markings of his plane. If it is possible for anyone to help me on my endeavor I would appreciate it a lot.

Thanks,
David

Hi David,

Project Bits and Pieces says that "Gus' Pup" was a natural metal finish B-17 but does not list the serial number and has no other information about it. The 487th Bomb Group flew B-17s and B-24s. Check the post about Association, Website and Reunions on the 487th forum , page 3, for the URL that has information about the planes and crews. Maybe one of the contacts listed can give you some information.

Thanks Terry, but it was a b-17. I appreciate the help and the link!

Vic - I have the serial number, the photographs I have found obstruct or do not show the side markings and part of the nose where the art would be. I suppose I'll just ask him when he gets back in town.

Thank you both, though.

My Grandfather, Jon P Fieweger was the flight engineer on gus's pup. I too would love to see some nose art, but onfurtunately I have had no luck!

David and Matt,
During the research for the Bomb Group history I found a couple of photos of 'Gus Pup', but unfortunately none of the nose art.
Matt, can you provide the 487th BG website with a photo of Lt Turner's crew?
David: please give my best regards to your granddad. I visited him way back in 2002 during my research for the book!
Best regards,
Ivo de Jong

My uncle, Lt. Victor Wiebeck, was the pilot who named Gus' Pup after the unit transitioned from 24s to 17s.  The 24 was named Gashouse Gus, in honor of Vic's father August Wiebeck, affectionately known as Gus. The new ac was named Gus' Pup, following in the tradition.  If the markings on the original  of the photo in D. Wise's posting are not clear enough to make out, possibly they are clear enough to compare with the nose art on Gashouse Gus which appear several places on the internet.  It is logical that the same, or similar, graphics might be used on the new ac.  Unfortunately, Vic is no longer with us, nor is the Crew Chief, Levi Lincoln.
