School or Training Squadron 108?????possibly at Garden City, Kansas???HELP - 08/24/2008 12:03:33 PM
I just received the IDPF for 2Lt. John L. Bassan, 385FS, 364FG, 8AF, KIA November 27, 1944. I am tracing his training and have a partial copy of a dental identification record, it is cut off.  It doesn't have a date but had to be after July 1943, his age is listed as 20 and his birthday is July 14, 1923. At the top it says San Antonio Aviation, below that is Block 1 & 2 his last and first name then below his name is Block 3, 4, & 5; Rank: Aviation Cadet, Company: Squadron 108, and Regiment: AAF, below that line are Blocks 6, 7, & 8, Age:20, Race: W, and Nativity: Massachusetts.
John Bassan enlisted on December 1, 1942 and received Primary Flight Training at the 320th Flying Training Detachment, 31st Flying Training Wing, Mustang Field, El Reno, OK. Their Squadrons I've been told were the 502nd, 1050th, 1051st, 1091st, and 1092nd. His address there was Flight A, 320th Mustang Field, El Reno, OK.
He then went  to Garden City AAF, Kansas for Basic Flight Training. An address I have from him there is Cadet Det. Squadron 4, C.G. AAF, Garden City, KS.
It may have been at Garden City, AAF, Kansas where he received Basic Flight Training. He went on to Advanced Flight Training at Aloe AAF, Victoria, TX. and then was at Waycross AAF in Georgia and also spent some time at Dale Mabry Field in Tallahassee, Fl. He arrived in England in Sept. 1944. Another dental identification chart dated Sept. 30, 1944 was made out at Station F-345, 496th Fighter Training Group which was at Goxhill, England. He probably trained there in the 555th FS.
So after all that the question is:
Does anyone have any idea where Squadron 108 was located and any other info about it , i.e. Training Detachment, Wing, etc.????

Thank you,
Patrick

The unit numbers between 101 and 300 in the AAF and USAF have been reserved for National Guard units.  The only units in this number block that were active in WW II were  various reconnaissance units (observation, photo recon, tac recon, bomb recon, weather recon, or liaison).

Two possibilities:
1.  A digit was left off.  The 1089th Basic Flying Training Sq was also located at Garden City AAF.  On 7 Apr 43 this unit was redesignated the 49th Basic Flying Training Sq GP.

2.  It was a provisional unit.  These units did not always follow the nicities of number blocks.  However, in the Flying Training Commands, they usually just started at 1 at each base.  An example is the 4 CG in the address you mention, which is probably for a provisional 4th Cadet Group.

Push the stick forward, the houses get bigger. Pull the stick back, the houses get smaller (unless you keep pulling -- then they get bigger again)

I think you meant the 1089th BFT Squadron was renamed Hq & Hq Sq 49th BFT Group (not Squadron).
Also the 1090th, 1091st and 1092nd Basic Flying Training Squadrons (assigned to 49th BFT Group) were at Garden City, but if those numbers had been chopped off, it would read 109.
