Satan"s Siren - 09/13/2006 12:15:23 PM
My dad was First Lt. Denver Johnson, Jr. piloting the B-24  Satan's Siren in the 455th Bombardment  of Moosbierbaum oil refinery June 26, 1944.  I have a picture of his crew but only remember one of the names he used to mention - "Swede".  Any information would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you, Jackie Bauer

Jackie -- If you are looking at the same picture as was published in the 455th Bomb Group history (page 227), the caption is as follows:
Front row, l to r: Lawrence Danielson; Denver Johnson; Robertson; Newton Thigpen. Back row, l to r: Jack Johnson, Jack Freeman, Regis Johnson; Ernest Fry; Virgil Merrill. Ground crew, far left and right, back row unknown.
Right now we don't know a whole lot about this crew.  They appear to be from the 740th squadron and were probably a replacement crew.  Perhaps Dave U, who is extremely knowledgable about the Moosbierbaum raid, will have more information.

Thank you for your quick reply.  No. the pic I have is from my dad's belongings.  But the names do help a lot.  I have already been in touch with the Merrill family and hope to hear more as time goes along.  I'm not sure about them being a replacement group since I have newspaper clippings on their group being  one of 35  B-24's which took off April 2nd, 1944, from Italy to destroy the Daimler Puch aircraft factory  at Steyr Austria.   A Presidential Citation was awarded the crew  for this.   But hopefully he was a part of the  740th and that will narrow my hunt a bit.  Jackie

The "Swede" that Jackie is refering to was my Grandfather Horace Richard Anderson, aka Dick.  He actually flew on "OMIAKINBAK"  as a gunner of some sort.  I sure wold like to know more info on him if anyone has anything.  Also I'm looking for the book "Angel on our Wing" by Robert H Armstong if anyone knows anything.

Hi Zach,

I have some info on your grandfather from the archives.  He was the tail turret gunner on 1st Lt Ralph Chadwick's crew, and was shot down and taken prisoner on the 7 July 44 mission to the refinery at Odertal, Germany/occupied Poland.  The aircraft was indeed Omiakinbak, B-24H-10-CF, S/N 42-64481, an original 455th aircraft that was the oldest aircraft in the 741st squadron when it was shot down (according the the squadron history).

Omiakinbak went down in Czechoslovakia, and has been the subject of discussion before:

Maybe Svat or Mike can add something?

The Missing Aircrew Report (MACR) number is 6515, and there are a couple of ways to get a copy if you're interested.

I'll check to see if I can find anything else.

Regards,

Dave

My cousin Douglas Rezin was CoPilot  on the OMIAKINBAK with Locatelli crew from when they left the states until he was killed flying a mission with Slaters crew over PortoSan Stefano On 4-28-44. His  originol crew finished their tour and returned to the states.
