SSgt Dave Miller - 02/10/2005 01:55:46 PM
My wife's father, SSgt David Miller, was an aircraft armorer-gunner, reporting for duty with the 5th BG in June 1940 and was present when Hickam Field was attacked on 7 December 1941. He remained with the 5th until June 1943, flying combat missions at Midway (with LtCol Waldron's crew) and in the South Pacific while he was stationed at Epiritu Santo and Guadalcanal - 63 combat missions in all. I am searching for anyone who may have known him.

I have his photo album and have begun the process of scanning in the pictures. Some of the guys I have photos of are:

At Hickam (1940 - 41) - Griffith, Hoagland, Jackson, Hugh Gough, Eubanks, Arnold, Habermehl, Bonta, Helmcamp, Maddox, Enders, Nickolson, McGilvery, Mohon, Martin, Dunnaway, Lacy, McCall, Elliott, Thompson, Patton, Lemely, Ben Samuels, Irwin, Capt. Brooke Allen, Lt. Kocam, Lt. Haney, Lt. Waters, Capt. Ralph Rhudy (w/Dorothy Lamour) and Lt. Dickson.

South Pacific (Espiritu Santo & Guadalcanal, 1942 - 43) - Combat Crew "Brewer's Bruisers": Capt. S. Brewer, Lt. J. Crich, Lt. Johns, Lt. Watson, SSgt Walter Bodell, SSgt Cooms, SSgt Flood, SSgt MacKay, SSgt Pogreba, Sgt McMullins. Also photos of Messina, and one of Reeves and Rolfe repairing flak holes in a B-17 tail.

I also have many action-type photos of Hickam, Espiritu Santo and Guadalcanal. I would be happy to correspond with anyone that may be interested in these photos.

Major Richard H. Carmichael was inbound in his B-17 during the December 7th attack and diverted to an emergency strip, saving his crew and aircraft. He was awarded the DFC for his action and later was shot down over Japan in a B-29. He was commander of the 98th Bomb Group 1950-51 and flew 39 missions with them over Korea. Do you, by any chance, have a picture of his B-17 in Hawaii?

Unfortunately, no. The only B-17 pictures I have at Hickam is of a B-17A (BY 41). I do have several B-17 pics from the South Pacific campaign (New Hebrides and Solomons) though. Most of the Hickam photos I have are of B-18s.

I would love to get a copy of your photos. My dad Don Kundinger was with the 5th 31st Sqdn. from 12/7/41 to 7/42 when he and others from the 5th went to the 11th B.G. He was the navigator for the Andrews crew on the B-17 the origional  "SNAFU". Wounded at the battle of Santa Cruz and rejoined the 11th after they were rotated back to the states. 89 missions. look forward to talking with you.

Don,

I've scanned all of the photos from Hickam, so have electronic copies of them.  I still need to scan the ones from Espiritu Santo and Guadalcanal.  If you'd like, I can send you a CD via snail mail ~ just send me your address: bstewart@scitor.com

I hope to have the photos from Santo and Guad scanned later this summer.

Herb,

Maybe you already have this information but I found the text narrative, to accompany the photograph (at attachment) at:

http://www.honoluluadvertiser.com/specials/pearlharbor60/photogallery.html

"One of 12 unarmed B-17 bombers, which arrived from California during the attack, made an emergency landing at Bellows Field."

If you know which emergency strip MG Carmichael diverted to e.g. Bellows Field, this photograph might be his aircraft if he diverted there?  Other photographs I've seen of his squadron's B-17Ds after the attack appear to be on improved runways/ramps at Hickam - which would lead me to believe none of those are his aircraft.

Good luck with your search.

Andy, Herb,

The photo of the crash-landed B-17 is B-17C 40-2049 at Bellows Field, pilot 1st Lt Robert H Richards - at first it was classified repairable, but was later used for spare parts and not repaired.

Captain Richard H Carmichael landed B-17E 41-2429 at Haleiwa Aux Field, no damage recorded, it was in commision next day.

Hope this helps, Wynnum.

RE: SSgt Dave Miller - 12/15/2005 10:20:36 AM
Herb,

Don't know if you have the following info on MajGen Carmichael, but here goes . . . his official AF biography:

MAJOR GENERAL RICHARD HENRY CARMICHAEL

Retired Jan. 19, 1961.   Died April 14, 1983.

Richard Henry Carmichael was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1913. He graduated from San Antonio High School in 1930 and received a congressional appointment to West Point. He graduated in the class of 1936, 92nd in a class of 278.

Following graduation, Lieutenant Carmichael of the Field Artillery proceeded to Randolph Field, Texas where he graduated from flying school and received his pilot wings in 1937. Today he is a rated command pilot. By far, most of his flying time has been accomplished in multi-engine type aircraft.

During the period 1937-1941, he served in varied flying assignments including Hawaii, Fort Douglas, Utah and Hamilton Field, Calif. He departed Hamilton Field Dec. 6, 1941, arriving at Hickam Field the morning of Dec. 7, 1941 with his squadron of B-17s. Major Carmichael found that hostilities had begun and a heavy aerial attack was in progress. By expert flying skill he landed his B-17 on an emergency field of 1,200 feet and quickly placed it in a dispersal area. For this General MacArthur awarded him with his first of two Distinguished Flying Crosses.

As commander of the 19th Bomb Group, Colonel Carmichael participated in some 25 combat missions against the Japanese. An excerpt from his Distinguished Service Cross reads, "Although both his side gunners were killed and his airplane heavily damaged, he continued to press home the attack." The courageous and effective leadership of the group resulted in the shooting down of 11 enemy fighters and in the destruction, or severe damage to 50 bombers on the ground.

Returning to the Zone of Interior in November 1942, he served as executive assistant to General Hap Arnold at Army Air Force headquarters until assuming command of the 462nd Bomb Group. While leading his group in a B-29 attack on Yawata, Japan Aug. 20, 1944, the first daylight raid on Japan, he was shot down and remained a prisoner of war until he was liberated Aug. 29, 1945.

Following a period of hospitalization, he attended the Air Command and Staff School. After graduation he served on the Air University staff as chief of the Air Power Employment Branch, Evaluation Division. In June 1949, he assumed command of the 11th Bomb Group and April 1, 1950, he was assigned as commander of the 98th Bomb Group. The Korean action found him piling up another 39 combat missions, good for 363 hours as combat commander of the 98th. Returning to the States in April 1951, he was assigned as commander of the 93d Bomb Wing and in October 1951, he was reassigned to Travis to take command of the 14th Air Division at Travis Air Force Base, Calif.

General Carmichael returned to the Far East as commander of the FEAF Bomber Command in May of 1953. He was reassigned to Headquarters U.S. Air Force as deputy director of personnel procurement and training in May of 1953 and was made Director on Jan. 1, 1955. On July 11, 1958 he assumed his present job, that of commandant of the Air University's Air Command and Staff College.

OPINIONS, TASTES AND EVALUATIONS
Is a conservative dresser with no color preference. Is partial to Spanish type cooking. Enjoys curries.

Reading interests are varied. Is a student of Douhey and other airpower leaders. Is undecided on place of retirement.

"With the amount of effort required to be outstanding instead of average, any individual who remains average tends to be lazy," is one of the general's comments which best describe him. Another expression used to describe his position on the motto of any job worth doing is worth doing right is "Either I go first class or stay home."

He stresses loyalty both up and down the chain of command. Is a firm advocate of the position of "Fail to honor the men and they will fail to honor you."

Is a stickler for flying safety compliance. Is known by all who have served him as having a flair for remembering names, places and dates. Senior non-commissioned officers have often called him an airmen's general. Places great emphasis on the morale and well being of his people.

Mr. Stewart,
I saw your message about SSgt Dave Miller's photo album. Col. Ralph Rhudy was my Great Uncle. I believe his rank was Major at the time of his service at Hickam Field. He went on to command the 410th Bombardier Group in the European Theater. Anyway, I would love to have any pictures you have of him. If you have any scanned, could you e-mail them to me at j and p cook @ yahoo dot com? Col. Rhudy may not have known in his lifetime, but I've done considerable family history research, and he belonged to a line of American veterans going back to before the American Revolution, and he now rests at Arlington National Cemetery.

Patricia,

It is very good to hear from you.  I will send you electronic copies of the photos I have of your great uncle -  one of them is a group shot of the 5th Bombardment Group, Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron.   My father-in-law, Dave, was a member of the Headquarters Squadron which was commanded by Capt. Ralph Rhudy at the time.   Would love to hear about what happened to your great uncle after Pearl Harbor.

My father-in-law saw action in the South Pacific (Midway, Espirito Santo & Guadalcanal).   Flew 63 combat missions before returning stateside in June '43.  He went to the MTO (15th Air Force, 484th Bomb Group, 825th Bomb Squadron) in April '44 and was WIA on June 6, 1944 on a raid to Ploesti, his 20th combat mission with the 825th.  This wound ended his flying career.  He was an active duty Army sergeant major at the time of his death in '68.
