Ruff n Reddy

[unsure] I am trying to find information on my father's time in the military. All of his records were lost, and he would never speak of what happened while in the service. He just said "you don't want to know". I do know that he was a waist gunner, he flew 50 missions, stationed in England in 1943, then transferred to Italy until discharged. I am attaching a picture of him with the crew. On the back of the picture was written. Ruff and Reddy in his hand writing. My Uncle said he was with the 8th Air Force, and a newspaper article said he was in the 15th Air Force. He was Staff Sergeant Robert J. Maxwell I certainly hope that someone out there can push me in the right direction....thank you for any help.

Trish...the picture is a B-24... and "Ruff and Ready" is listed in Wally Forman's B-24 Nose Art Name Directory as a/c 42-52464 assigned to the 465th BG 783rd SQ in Italy. So now you know the Bomb Group and Bomb Squadron in Italy.

Go to

http://www.ArmyAirForces.com and then select the 465th Bombardment Group from the "AAF Unit and Database".
When the next window appears you will see "Association Information Available" click on "Click Here" and the next window will show several contacts for the 465th BG Association. plus other links to stories etc. Ask the BG Historian for information on your father.

Jim :-)

He was probably in 15 AF where we had to fly 50 missions. England flew 25 missions in 1943 and early 1944

[sly] Hi....thank you....I know he was in the 15th as it was in an article in the Wilmington Journal in July of 1944. I have a lot of disjointed facts to go on...and so far have found out that you can be in the 8th then the 15th...in one gunnery school, then another, etc. I am finding out plenty about WWII....a new interest. My son and I are getting a letter ready to send to many different places...maybe get some answers. Thanks again for your information. Trish
