Robert G Rose - 39th FS

Hi All,

I'm currently searching for the serial of the P-39 Robert G Rose of the 39th Fighter Squadron was flying when his aircraft crashed on take off on June 25, 1942.  He was rescued by three members of the 96th Engineers General Service Regiment who were all awarded the Soldier Medal.

The details on the loss can be found at:
http://www.pacificwrecks.com/aircraft/p-39/rose.html

Note that Rose had apparently suffered a landing accident at Port Moresby on June 6, 1942 while flying P-39F 41-7271.  Baugher's site lists this aircraft as crashing July 12, 1943 in Florida.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated...

He'd be right.

The highest FY numbered P-39D/F Airframe(Excluding 41-28***/38***'s) that came to Australia March-July 1942 was P-39F 41-7235

I'll confirm the serial soon. It is stated 41-7121 but that ship was wrecked USA 07/03/42 too

Ciao

Hi Chaps

Given the period, I'm incline to say start looking also in ACR-11.

What does that mean? Me thinks its more likely a P-400 given the period and what they were equipped with per TOE. Cross transition or "topup" of P-39Fs didn't happen until August 42 or there abouts.
I could be wrong, but I think the "271" Number  came off the "tip of the tail",.......aka Box Number. If so,..it could be in the range of BW1??

Just thinking out loud for the moment

Hmmm
