Richard Montell
-
09/12/2006 05:05:02 PM
I am trying to find out about Richard Montell. He was reported KIA on 15 June 1944. MACR 5742. Since there was only one P-51 lost that day and Waldemar Radener reported he shot down a 339 P-51 that day, I assume it was Richard. Radener was also shot down by a P-51 the same day. The mission report that listed Richard as missing also said two Fw 190s were shot down. Maybe Radener was one of them. I visited Richards grave in Normandy in the late 60s but nothing else is known by the family. Since I am only the ex-husband of a great niece, I am not sure I can get the MACR. The wife left Richards picture and service cap. I guess they lost interst. Thanks, Bill Boggs

Thank you for the information. Here is what I found so far. Richard Joined the Army Air Corps on November 3, 1941. He had three years of college. He was in the 504th fighter squadron, 339th fighter group. He flew a P-51B, s/n 43-24772. His group went to England and was stationed at Fowlmere. They flew their first mission on April 30 1944 and their last on April 21 1945. Richard was shot down on June 15, 1944. He was on a bomber escort mission to Tours, in France when they were attacked by German fighters. Unfortunately for Richard, he was attacked by Walemar Radener. Radener had 21 confirmed kills and 14 unconfirmed kills and was one of Germanys top air aces. He was flying a FW190. Radener was also shot down that day and was injured and did not return to duty until September. Radener died in a training accident in 1957. There were two reports of Richard being shot down. One by Charles Hunter who was on the mission and he said it happened at 7:25 in the morning west of Druex and one by Radener who said it was 7:15 near Bonneval. Both are consistent. The reports are 10 minutes and 60 km apart. The 339th lost only one P-51 that day and the Germans reported only one P-51 from the 339th shot down. Richard was brought to the hospital in Chartres and died that day. He was given a funeral in Chartres Cathedral and buried in St. Cheron Cemetery. He was later interned in the US Military Cemetery, St. Andre-De-Eure. He was then moved to St. Laurent (Normandy) where he is now.

Bill couldn't find a photo of Montell but he only joined the group on June 6 and was shot down on the 15th. The 339th were credited with 2 Me.109s and 2 Fw.190s on 15th; by Waymire, Wyatt, Meyer and Fiorito. The other claim by VIII FC that day was an Me.109 shot down near Rouen by the 356th. (Scheible). There was one more P-51 lost, W.F.Perra (20FG) shot down by flak near Dreux (KIA). The other 2 losses were P-38s. Hunter was killed on 16 Aug. Nick
