Radio callsign protocol question - 06/30/2008 07:50:46 AM
Would like to know how callsigns were used in radio communications.

i.e. 533rd squadron used VP for squadron letters. Most aircraft were assigned a specific letter, such as P. So would VPP be called as 'victor papa papa'? This plane was also named "Dreambaby". Would it have been called by its name?

Aircraft that had no specific call letter but only squadron letters, how were these aircraft called?
Were the last few digits of their serial numbers used after the squadron letters? i.e. 'victor papa 174' for 43-39174 "Little Joe", or would it be called by the name "Little Joe"?

Not essential knowledge, but would be nice to know.

Al,
From what I have determined I believe the callsign for VP*P would have been "Tabby Papa" since the callsign for the 533rd bomb squadron was Tabby.

Thank you for that information. I am totally unimformed about radio communications at Ridgewell.

Can you tell me what the callsigns of the other squadrons were? I would like to get MS Flight Simulator ATC to call the planes by the correct callsigns. It would be much appreciated.

How did the planes call the station if/when radio communications were allowed?

Any pertinant information would be helpful.

Regards, Al Lee
