Questions about my dad's service in the Army Air Forces and Airborne Engineers

Can anyone help fill in some blanks about my dad's service?  Here are some approximate dates and the bases where he trained.
Army Air Forces:
Ft. Thomas, KY  Entered Service                                      Feb1, 1943
Clearwater, FL  Basic Training:  Air Corps Basic (521)     Base and dates unknown (I assume it was for 4-5 weeks)
Chanute Field, Rantoul IL :  Welding School                   12 weeks-from his Separation and Qualification Record
Transferred to Airborne Engineers:
Westover Field, Springfield, MA:  Engineer training         12 weeks-assumed from research
Bradley Field, Windsor Locks, CT                                      Late Summer/Fall 1943
(Transferred to Richmond, VA right after Thanksgiving)
Richmond, VA      (edited)                                                  Nov-Dec 1943
(Transferred to Goldsboro, NC right after Christmas)
Goldsboro, NC  Base Unknown-Seymour Johnson???      ???   Dec, 1943-March, 1944   ???
(Departed April 2, 1944, from North Carolina)

Under Service Schools Attended, my dad's records show that he went to Army Air Force Tech, Sch 1.  I think this must have been the 1st Technical School Squadron at Chanute Field, per the list of training school squadrons that mbee53(Mark) recently posted.

Is there a similar list for Airborne Engineer training schools?  My dad was transferred to the Airborne Engineers after welding school at Chanute Field.  He said he went to demolition school and also to blacktop school to learn to build and patch roads and airfields.  Does anyone have any idea which school would have been at which field?

Dad was transferred back into the Army Air Forces when he arrived in Bombay.  He was an airplane mechanic, working mainly on P-40s. His MOS was Airplane and Engine Mechanic 747.  How does mechanic training fit in with the above timetable?

Thanks for any information as well as suggestions for further research.

Although there was no AAF base headquartered in Clearwater, the AAF Basic Training Center No 6 was headquartered in St Petersburg, FL.  I believe that like the center in Miami Beach this center used leased resort hotels, and it is possible that one of them was physically in nearby Clearwater.

Chanute Field was home to AAF Technical School (Mechanics No. 1) from 1941 (as an Air Corps Technical School until 1947 (when it became a USAF Technical School without the number).  I believe this school (rather than one of the many Technical School Squadrons at the field) is the unit referred to while he was at Chanute.  This was probably the school where he received his aircraft mechanic training.

The 1st Airborne Aviation Unit Training Center was apparently originally located at Westover Fld MA, but moved to Richmond AAB.  This is probably the headquarters for his engineer training.  By the way, Richmond AAB is not the same as Langley Fld (later Langley AFB), which is in Hampton VA.  Richmond AAB later became Byrd Fld.
Although you do not say what engineer unit your dad was in, the dates and some locations you mention are consistent with the moves of the 873rd Airborne Aviation Engineer Battalion.  You can get more information about this unit (and other information about the AAF in the CBI) at Gary G's website:

Thank you for your reply.
His training at Chanute was actually in welding, as shown on his Separation Qualification Record.  That stated, "Welding School, Chanute Field, Illinois, Combination Welding Course 12 weeks."  Unfortunately, no other training information is shown on the form, except "Air Corps Basic (521)."
Dad told me that he was at Westover Field for engineer training.  He also went to  demolition and blacktop school, I think at Bradley Field or at the Richmond base.
Someone else told me he went to "Langley Field, in Richmond, VA."  I see now that it could not have been the case.
I don't know which Airborne Engineer Battalion my dad was in, but I will certainly follow up with the 873rd Airborne Aviation Engineer Battalion you mentioned.  I'm hoping that will help fill in some blanks.
I discovered Gary G's site this summer, and have found much information there.  I've also enjoyed reading the Ex-CBI Roundup magazines, and am working my way through them.  But without knowing my dad's battalion number, I haven't always known what to look for on these or any of the sites I've searched.
I did discover an interesting book chapter online at
http://140.194.76.129/pub...ns/misc/un21/c-14.pdf. The chapter is "Chapter XIV"
"Engineer Aviation Units."  There is no book title or author given, and no homepage, so I don't know the source of the information.   Anyway, it says that on April 1, 1943, "the airborne EAUTC at Westover Field in The First Air Force" was activated, and that "airborne battalions remained at Westover Field for 12 weeks."  Perhaps my dad was in one of the next battalion there, after his 12 weeks at Chanute.
Thank you again for your helpfulness.

Melinda...Are there any letters from him, while stationed in India ?    If so, the return address should tell you the unit he was assigned to, in India.

My brother told me that after my dad completed demolition school, he assisted in training the following group(s).  No wonder his service dates and the battalion dates I've seen don't match up!

Update on the Airborne Engineer information.  My brother found that the "Chapter XIV" I referred to was from the Corps of Engineers site.

Jim,
No, there are no letters, but one of his photos is marked with his APO address on the back, "APO 883."
His discharge papers do show that he was with the 89th Airdrome Squadron while in India, but there is no mention of his Airborne Engineer battalion(s) while stationed in the US.

In response to the questionnaire I sent to NARA requesting my dad's reconstructed records, I received a copy of his Soldier's Qualification Card, WD AGO Form 20.  It answered many, though not all, of my questions!  It turns out that Dad was in the 883rd Airborne Engineer Aviation Battalion, and as Bernie S. suggested, he was at Richmond AAB, and at St. Petersburg, FL, where he had 8 weeks of basic training.
Dad's airplane mechanic training actually took place in India, another reason his training dates in the US just didn't add up.

A letter from NPRC accompanied the form.  The letter states, in part, that National Guard records which are "normally maintained by the military service or the Adjutant General's Office in the state in which service was performed," are sometimes sent to NPRC for storage.  NPRC said that's where they found my dad's record and they suggested contacting the state's Adjutant General's office for further information.

Gene Autry (1907-1998) [singing cowboy in westerns] joined the Army Air Forces in 1942 and became Sgt. Gene Autry. During the war he ferried fuel, ammunition, and arms in the China-India-Burma theater of war and flew over the Himalayas, the hazardous air route known as "The Hump." When the war ended, Autry was reassigned to Special Services where he toured with a USO troupe in the South Pacific before resuming his movie career in 1946.

Dad's training was in the 883rd Airborne Engineer Aviation Battalion.  Searching AFHRA hasn't turned up anything, but fold3 did.  Navy War Diary entries show Co. B, 883rd A/B Engr Avn Bn went aboard U.S.S. LCI(L) 536 on Feb. 7, 1944 for beaching exercises on Feb 8th and 9th.  The 883rd disembarked at Bradford Beach, VA. on Feb 10th, 1944.
I was surprised, but pleased, to find this information in Navy records.

This is an interesting source of information for any USAAF ground echelons deployed by these ships.
http://www.navsource.org/archives/10/15/15idx.htm
http://www.navsource.org/archives/10/15/150536.htm

I was able to find the USS Deuel (APA-160), this is the ship that returned the 509thCG ground echelon to the States.
http://www.navsource.org/archives/10/03/03160.htm
There seems to be no record of the USS Cape Victory that deployed the 509th CG ground echelon to Tinian.

Thanks for the heads up cbidaughter.

Wow! Let me start over!:>) If indeed your dad had a pet monkey, the pictures I have might be him. They were taken in India, I believe and I am told his name is Bill Garth. I saw a post that referenced someone's Dad having a pet monkey but I can't remember where I saw it..

Hi Vicki,
No, that wasn't my dad, but the pet monkey does sound interesting.

Do you happen to know where Bill Garth was stationed in India, and what unit he was with?  I looked, but didn't see his name on the partial rosters I have for the 89th Airdrome Squadron, which was my dad's squadron.

I just looked at your photo album and posts about your uncle.  I see that he was killed May 28, 1944.  My father didn't arrive in India till June 1, 1944, so they couldn't have known each other.

I noticed that your uncle's photo shows the Taj Mahal with scaffolding around the dome. The work on the dome was finished by the time my dad was stationed in Agra, late July, 1945.  His tent was within sight of the Taj Mahal, far off in the distance.

BTW, I like the way your uncle's aerial photo shows the Taj Mahal in the context of the more barren land surrounding the lovely buildings and gardens.  I think the barren look is more like my dad's living conditions at the Central India Air Depot.

Thanks for your interest, and good luck with your research.
Melinda :-)
Will you be posting any information or excerpts from your uncle's letters?
