Question for former aircrew guys about issued gear

While trying to help another member trace down what gear was probably worn by a family member as a bomber crewman, I ran up against this question ....  What clothing / gear was issued to you that you kept in your posession at all times, and what was issued from unit storerooms only when a flight was about to take place ?

For example, I know that you kept your basic uniforms with you at all times, but what about  flight coveralls ? Did you keep them, or were they turned in after flight ?  Same with electrical flight suits,  were they kept with you, or did you turn them in after each mission ?

I know parachutes and Mae Wests were turned in, but what about personal side-arms ?  Goggles, flight helmets ?

It would be interesting for us to know what you guys kept in the footlockers and on the hooks by the bunk, and what gear and clothing was only issued just prior to a mission / flight.

SHAEF,

As I recall the only piece of gear that was turned in after each flight was the parachute.  We were issued flight gear which we kept in an equipment bag stored in a building for that purpose on the flight line area.
The flight suits, which were like a jump suit, were kept by each crewman and worn every day like fatigues were worn by the ground personnel.  The heated suits, Mae West, harnesses, helmets, oxygen masks, flight boots and gloves were in your equipment bag and only turned in after you tour competion.
The flak vests staus I can't remember probably because I couldn't wear one in the ball turret.

Bob,

The flak vest and helment were left on the aircraft for the next crew to use.

All of the flight gear was issued to us to keep with the exception of the parachute which we checked out before each mission.  At the 303rdBG we had lockers assigned for storage purposes.  The flak suit and helment remained on the aircraft.

This is great information. Thanks SHAEF1944 for starting this thread! As a follow up question, when did you have your flight gear (electrically heated suit, etc) issued to you? Did you get it once you arrived in England/Italy or did you get it in the US just prior to leaving? That could determine in some cases exactly what you got.
Thanks.

If anybodies interested, this is the way it is still done in 2012, just showing the Army changes come very slow. All flight gear, vest, helmet, gloves etc, are stored in the kit bag in a locker by the flight line, the only thing issued prior to each mission in Iraq was a survival radio. One piece flight suits (although not worn in the army since `2010) were worn at all other times as the duty uniform. Of course in the UH60 we didn't have parachutes, but we did keep our floatation device in your locker. As a side note, since we were in the desert, we had a cooling vest like a car radiator instead of a heated suit. This vest plugged into a cooling unit in the ACFT and cycled coolant under our flight suits, which had 30-40 lbs of body armor worn at all times in the ACFT.
