Question - B25 Crew Chief/Little Joe
-
07/15/2007 12:05:24 AM
Hello All, My Grandfather, TSGT Leslie Rocole was Crew Chief on plane called Little Joe that served in the 321BG/448BS. I know that the B25 ran a crew of 6. As Crew Chief would he have gone up with his plane on missions? IF so would he have been listed as "E" or Engineer on the crew list. Any confirmation on this would help me in my research. Thanks - Airman Akins

I have nver seem a crew chief on a comabt schedule for the 340th BG. I would assume that the crew cheif, being a non-combat person and highly traine din B-25 maitanance would not be approved for combat, and it would be a very rare occurance they would fly a mission The Flight Engineer was usually the top-turret gunner and was responsible for in flight issues that would come up. I do know that the crew chief would fly with the pilot after serious reparis/maintanace to the plane. Espscially after a engine change, hydraulic repairs, tensioning of lfight control cables, etc. This was so he could monitor the fix in in-flight conditions, and also so the pilot would have faith in his work :-) My grandfather's crew cheif kept a log book of all his flights, and had over a hundred hours of time in the air.

One more thing...I have seen crew chiefs on flight crews when the squadron/group would move to a new base, and they wouldbe designated as CC.
