Dwilma01 C-47 and C-46, but that's all I can say. Thanks David. I knew that much, but the units and serial allocations are not known yet. Hoping someone knows.

Hi Mike, Thanks. Don't suppose you know which number blocks were allocated to each group? Tom

Looking at the 317th TCG photos on this link: http://www.usaf317thvet.org/JungleSkipperPhoto.htm it looks like they were using a style X**. Of the photos I can see, the style of the numbers is not the same as on the C-47 mystery photo. They seem to be using full block numbers, not the stencil style of number as shown in your photo. It is possible that they used both styles at various times. As for the 375th. Here is some "thin" evidence that they may have used X***. Search for 375 on the link: http://www.gregssandbox.com/54th/newsletter/dec04.htm One poster mentions he has pictures of planes his grandfather flew in the 375th numbered X185 and X192.

From various photos, websites and books this is how I believe the numbers were assigned to the Fifth TCGs and one CCG. It would make "X631" from the 6th CCS / 2nd CCG. And the C-47 MAY be 6th TCS / 374th TCG with their "W" over the designator ( possibly 518). From May 1945 they had a different number system. Note the addition of an "A" suffix after the numbers on C-47s in March 1945 eg. "X65A". Nick

Thanks, According to your 'wiring diagram' my C-46 is from the 2nd CCG 6th CCS but how did you come to the cnclusion on the C-47 with only one digit clearly visible? Yours Tom

Tom I did say it MAY be 6th TCS but looking at it again I don't think the middle number is a "1" ( or "4") as they should have square top edges; it's not a 2,3,5,6,7 or 8 going by the stencil breaks which leaves "9" ie. W598 from the 33rd TCS same group. Just my opinion though. Artwork is early Vargas, Feb. 1941. Regards Nick

Thanks for the explanation Nick. I keep looking at the Vargas artwork and trying to decipher the full name. Could it be 'Hangar Queen' and if so does that help in identifiying either the aircraft serial or the unit? Tom

Tom looks like it begins with "MA----" . Dana Bell reckons the 33rd used Native American tribal names like "Cherokee" and "Osage" but such a name doesn't really complement the artwork. C-47s were delivered camouflaged and this one has been stripped to bare metal so quite a late date ( probably 1945) and the 33rd was stationed on Luzon PI then---" Manila Queen" springs to mind but just a wild guess. Hi Nick, It looks like that. Manila Queen is possible. Any ideas of identity of aircraft? Tom
