Hope it's the right place here.
Can anyone explain this black shield-like sign between PR and NG ?
The aircraft is a Puerto Rico Air National Guard P-47N

 For what an opinion is worth... I believe the shield pictured to be an uncompleted Air National Guard insigne.

Perhaps someone with more knowledge of markings of the era can correct or clarify?

During my search for these rare insigna of the PRANG I came across this article describing a similar insigna of the Hawaiian ANG.

I'm looking for images/fotos/scans of other or similar shields/insigne of other Air National Guard planes.
