Pregnant Polecat - 12/24/2007 07:53:42 AM
My Uncle was Glendon Valley Davis, Capt. a/c 43-6867 "Pregnant Polecat" P51-B. He was shot down over France in April 44 but evaded capture and returned to England in Sept. 44. I am commissioning a painting of a combat scene based on one of my uncle's encounter reports and would like some information if anyone can help.

I believe that my Uncle's tail no. was 43-6867 although I have some info that it was 43-6867. According to the MACR list 43-6867 was lost in Aug 44, well after the "Pregnant Polecat" crashed.

My uncle's wingman was Thomas "Little Red" Harris 43-6653 and his aircraft was "Li'l Red's Rocket." Does anyone have a picture of the nose art for this a/c?

My wife is in the USAF and we are stationed at RAF Lakenheath. We visited Leiston las fall and have some pictures of the memorial if anyone is interested I could send them to you.

Thanks,
Craig Barber

Hi Craig,

According to Merle Olmsted's 'To War with the Yoxford Boys', it was indeed C5-O 43-6867 "Pregnant Polecat" from which your uncle bailed out on April 28 1944.

Merry Christmas,

Craig--Paul          this is Harris' C5-S ; the date is early 1944 as the white tail bands were deleted in March, and the red-yellow checks added in April.
There are 11 white bombs and 1 swastika, also his name under the windscreen. I think the name is in the common colours of red name with a yellow "shadow" on top left sides. Note the early style pole mast but no wire aerial. Drop tanks are 75 gal. metal type painted neutral grey. It has the framed canopy.

Thanks everyone for the information. In my original post I meant to say that some sources have the "Pregnant Polecat" as 43-6878 (http://www.cebudanderson.com/357profilepregnantpolecat.htm). But I do think that 43-6867 is the correct tail number.

Thanks very much to BuckeyeUK for the picture of "Li'l Red Rocket." You don't happen to have any "Pregnant Polecat" pictures do you?
Thanks again!
Craig

I concur - 43-6878 listed as a 23rd FG a/c lost on Aug 6, 1944.  MACR 7267.  I believe this is to what you were referring in your original post.

Craig -
My Dad is John C. Howell , C5 - L " Shoo Shoo Baby ".
Glendon and Red were Sq. Mates. Dad and Red were pretty good Buddies.
Dad has a good Picture of Him and Red out on the Town.
Do you have Merle's last Book - To War with the Yoxford Boys ?
Merry Christmas,
Michael Howell
