Possible B-24 piece? - 08/26/2008 05:47:53 PM
I'm attaching a picture to this post of a part that was recently found at Seething Airfield, home of the 448th BG. Anyone have an idea what it might be? (It may be in a frame of some sort from the period, but that is unclear to me from the information I was provided.)

Thanks.

Reed

Hi Reed,

That certainly is an interesting 'piece'.  The title of your thread implies that someone thinks this is a part from a B-24?  With the silhouttes of two naked nymphs I doubt that it was factory installed!  Is there anything on the reverse side?  What type of metal is it?  Could have been some crew's good luck charm that they rubbed as they got aboard for a mission.  Appears to have been attached by the strip across the bottom.

Hal,

Good grief! I must be getting old or blind or both. I didn't even notice the figures! I was thinking the two triangular openings on the lower left would make it possible to identify. Maybe I can just fall back on the old figure/ground perceptual conundrum, eh?

I don't know about markings, but will check.

Thanks your reply.

Enlightened,

Reed

Reed,

No sweat my friend, a good laugh for both of us.  I have never really gotten over puberty ... I can visualize the female form almost anywhere!  Actually what it looks like to me is something you'd see attached to the mud flaps of an over the road truck but the width to height ratio is a bit off.  If it truly is a WW II artifact I'd still fall back on some kind of good luck charm.

Regards,
Hal

Hal,

I'm not sure it is an artifact, but it apparently was found on the airfield near a hangar and the old workshops. I've got an inquiry out for more information, including checking for any markings.

My inquiry was sooo serious, but as you said, a good laugh in the end, which is really hard to beat.

Reed,  VERY interesting piece!  I like Hal's comparison of possibly a "good luck charm."  Here at the GM WR Plant, I am always being given bits and pieces of "whatevers" and asked if they could have been from the FO WR days when the B-24's were being produced here either from Libs or the Facility itself. I've got shell casings (.50 cal), a stretcher used by the medical staff, pieces of metal (non-descript), rivets, a tin can with a handle swedged on top (haven't determined what this is yet), an artificial horizon (made by GM for FO), miscellaneous plant items, Fire Call boxes, doors (stamped with USAAF + S/N's) and finally something very special, that I've had "hidden" for years, which will eventually go to YAM once the paperwork is finished: most all the parts for two .50 cal waist guns.  Hopefully someone might identify your historical "piece."  Best Regards!  Steven

Reed,
My WAG is that it is the artwork of a ground crew member. Keep in mind the doldrums suffered sometimes in waiting for the planes to return or not having liberty, and also many of the guys were very artistic. I've seen some beautifull work put out by "Tin Knockers", sheet metal workers, to the unbeknownst and gutter minded. We used to make rings out of 50 cent pieces using the metal knife handle to pound in the roundness. We would file out the head on the mercury dime when making a heart neckless, all that to satiate boredom.

Again, just a WAG.
