Good Morning,

Firstly, my friend Roger and I, we would like to thank again Jaap (Airwar) for his great help !!!

Please find below a map of the location of the wrecks of the airplanes shot down during the fight between 2 Fw-190 of the 9./JG77 and at least 4 pilots of the 428th FS. It appeared it was a confusion in the MACR between Mortree and Nogent-le-Rotrou ... :

1 - 1st Lt (or 2nd Lt ?) James S. Frederick Jr - P-38J #42-104224 - Roger have the testimony of Mr Frankaert who hided him in the Mortree aera,
2 - 2nd Lt Robert J. Rubel - P-38J #42-67515 -  KIA - There is a small monument dedicated to him in Montmerrei,
3 - Uffz. Hans-Bruno Maximow 9.JG.77 - FW-190 Werk Number 731094 , white 232 - buried in his aircraft,
4 - Oberleutnant Wolfgang Ernst - StaffelKapitan 9.JG.77 - FW-190 Werk Number 350151, white 231 - he bailed out but was wounded ...

Have a good Sunday ... Marc & Roger

Bonjour Marc,

You are correct in that the two 428th FS pilots shot down were Bob Rubel and James Frederick.  My good friend, Bob Milliken (429th FS), was the one who shot down Ernst. I have a very good friend who knows this fight very well. His name is Jean Claude Clouet and he lives in Montmerrei. You should get with him for more details.

Marc,

You can do me a favor. I do know the crash site locations for Rubel and Frederick. This is the first I have seen of the crash sites for Ernst and Maximow. I would appreciate it if you could send me a map pinpointing all four crash sites based on your research. I can use this information to further refine my research for this battle. Send me a PM and I can provide my email address for you. I can also provide JC Clouet's email as well.

A+, Gary
