Photos of Mountain Time crew
-
05/10/2007 07:20:11 PM
I know there is a photo of the Mountain Time crew from 336 sqdrn on the 487 site, unfortunately my father is not in it. I guess the photo was taken before he was assigned to the plane. My father was James Bello and is listed in the crew roster as a waist gunner. Mountain Time was a B-24 and the name was changed when they got to B-17's to Honorable Patches after a mission where the ship got shot up. My father passed in 1971 at the age of 57. I would love to have a crew photo of him in either aircraft.

Jim, Your father's crew arrived at Lavenham on January 20, 1945. Of course, the old B-24 'Mountain Time' had left the field by then, as the B-24s were replaced by B-17s in July 1944. 'Honorable Patches' was not there anymore as well, as it had crashed on November 25, 1944. Your father's crew was as follows: Gerald W. Claywell pilot Sidney F. Turner co-pilot Robert E. Kane navigator Lewis Arabia bombardier Frederick D. Brandt engineer Chesleigh B. Hallman Jr. radio-operator Eugene E. Bosche gunner Joseph S. Bello gunner William F. Howell gunner Claywell's crew flew in a number of B-17s such as 43-38254 (Feb 20), 44-6845 (Feb 23 and March 9), 43-39173 (feb 28), 43-38589 (March 2, 3, 7, 8 ). It does seem that the crew did not have an 'own' aircraft. Your best bet for a photo is to do a 'white page' search for the crewmembers named above, and see if any one of them can help you out. In case you find one, please don't forget to send a copy to Lee Hauenstein for the 487th BG website. Best regards, Ivo de Jong The Netherlands

Hi Ivo, Thanks for the reply, but you have the wrong Bello. There are 2 Bello's listed, James and Joseph (I don't think they were related). You list Joseph, my father was James. The aircraft number listed for him on the 487th site places him in the same plane as the Zerr crew, but he must have been on an alternate crew or possibly a replacement for one of the members listed in the crew photo.

Well, that is interesting. During my research for the 487th BG history, I only came across a Joseph Bello, and not James Bello! Do you have any formal 'evidence' about your dad being on a combat crew in the 487th?? I am unable to find him listed, but know that sometimes individuals were assigned to combat crews within being properly listed. Unfortunately there are no 'crew loading lists' for the 487th, so that source is denied to us. Any paper that you may have, may be of help. Best regards, Ivo de Jong

Sorry for the long delay in a reply. I personally do not have any "hard" evidence. All of my fathers papers with the exception of the "Blue Book" were lost when he divorced his first wife just after the war. The book and a couple of portrait photos is all that I have. He is listed on Lee's site as James Bello - Waist Gunner 836 sqdrn in B-24 Mountain Time 42-52736
