Parts of B17 42-5985 549th BS recovered - 09/05/2007 10:37:27 AM
Hey from Northern-Germany,

we, member of a Missing Aircrew Research Group, became the advice about the crashside of the B 17 F-40VE Serial 42-5985, 549 BS lost 20 June 1944.
The 2.  Lt. Joseph A. Montgomery crew were all POW, only the Co-Pilot 2. Lt. Samuel K. Levy killed as his Parachut not open.
The Crew:
2nd Lt. Joseph A. Montgomery O-757241 POW, Pilot (Science Hill, Kentucky)
2nd Lt. Samuel K. Levy KIA, Co-pilot (Grave in the USA)   (Cedarhurst, New York)
2nd Lt. Milton Shalinsky O-711492 POW, Navigator (Kansas City, Montana)

2nd Lt. Santo F. Caruso O-762759 POW, Bombardier (West Newton, Massachusetts)
S/Sgt James A. Martin 34702275 POW, Top Turret Gunner (Calera, Alabama)
S/Sgt Yoris M. Cottongim Jr. 38464719 POW, Radio Operator (Tulsa, Oklahoma)
Sgt John O. Hadzega 31280490 POW, Ball Turret Gunner (Naugatuck, Connecticut)
Pvt Leo L. Allard 6145219 POW, Left Waist Gunner (Gardner, Massachusetts)
Sgt John H. Davis 15324044 POW, Right Waist Gunner (Washington, DC)
Sgt Frank P. Sutula 11100669 POW, Tail Gunner (West Suffield, Connecticut) Chief of Police in Suffield died Dec. 2004
The plane crashed in marshy ground nearby of a lake.
We found many parts of the ball turret, bomb bay, oxygen bottles, a piece of the Engine and some fine shoes.
We searching for additional Information about the crew and the plane.

The information that you are looking for may be obtained through the National Archives.  There is a link to these on the MACR db site on this web page.  The MACR for the crew mentioned in your post is MACR 5899.

I am very interested in the parts found in the northern German marsh.  My father was Milton Shalinsky, and my family has information about him and other crew members.  We are in touch with the daughter of Sam Levy who was KIA, and some of the others.  My father spent eleven months as a German POW after the B-17 was shot down.  The plane was known as Mr. Smith.  My father was known in POW camp as the "sage of Sagan" because of his quick dry wit.  Would be happy to share and receive more info.
