According to Wally Forman's B-24 Nose Art Name Directory, 42-7579, was in the
445 BG ,702 BS ...there is a note....there is no picture.

Please go to Units d/b at the top left of this page and click on that....input 455 in Group Search...and follow.

Here is the webmaster for the 455th BG.

The picture enclosed shows an aircraft (42-7691) from the 449BG, 15th AF, not 42-7579 from the 445th

Pat,

Here's what appears to me to be another image of the same "Paper Doll" nose art provided earlier by Keith.

If I find any more "Paper Doll" images, I'll pass them on to you.

Pat,

In the for whatever it's worth category, there was a B-24H with a name similar to your father's a/c (see graphic below) as well as a B-17 in the 457th named "Paper Doll" .

34th BG (H)/7th BS (H) 42-94799 “The Paper Doll”

It seems the name Paper Doll was popular with the B-17s as well...I counted 23 B-17s.

Thank you everone for the response. The picture of the B-24 in response is not the Paper Doll my father flew in. The one he flew in was from the 445th BG out of tibinham it went down 24/Feb/1944. I can not seem to track down a picture of it. I will not give up my search

Hi Patrick,

In the for what it's worth department, there is a reference to 42-7579 in Project Bits and Pieces. Says this AC was 'Paper Doll" Woman in evening dress and gives a reference to pp 171 of Roger Freeman's Mighty Eighth War Manual. Sounds like a picture must be there but I no longer have my copy to verify it. Maybe someone else can check it out for you. My reference also shows 21 AC by that name, some B-24s and some B-17s, all in the 8th Air Force plus some other slight variations. Quite a popular name.

The photo in post #2 is the 449th Paper Doll, s/n 42-7691. Pictured is the Richard Garrison crew, both lost 4/4/44 over Bucharest, MACR 3703. The photo in post #5 is also the 449th ship. She became known 'tongue-in-cheek' as Raper Doll after the 2/20 mission in support of the Anzio Beachhead. Note the flak patch which appears to turn the P into an R. Positively the 449th ship. The 449th Paper Doll is also the subject of a James Dietz painting titled "Maximum Effort" and was commisioned by Lt. Col. Hollie Wilkes of the 449th Association.

Hi

No pictures and not much info.  My uncle Charles Sherd was a RW gunner on 42-7579.  Can you post or email the crash picture.   He did not like to talk about the war.

Thanks,  John

    Hi Patrick,
My name is Terry Sherd. My father is the one mentioned by my cousin John (brakesnake). I tried to e-mail you last fall 07, at the address you have listed, but I assume that your e-mail address has changed since your original post in 05. I had high hopes of contacting you and was disappointed when that didn't happen. I have a picture of our fathers together with the rest of their crew next to their plane, but unfortunately it's the side of the plane not the nose. I hope you occasionally check this post so we can make contact. I have other info I would love to share with you.
Regards,
Terry
