It's an excellent website! For anyone interested, POW #190 on Mark's list, Sgt. Robert Johnson, has written an excellent book about his military service and internment at Shumen. The title is "Gidi Gidi Boom Boom" (the name of his B-24) and the publisher is Prairie International in Fort Worth, Texas. There are photos of Gidi on the website, as a matter of fact. I had the pleasure of meeting Sgt. Johnson at the ceremonial rollout of our B-24 in May at Midland. He presented our crew chief, Gary Austin, with the bomb release handle from Gidi. He had purchased it from the local museum at the site of Gidi's demise in Bulgaria when he was there researching his book, and it now resides in the bombardier's quadrant of Ol'927. Crouchley crew. Their original plane was called "Miss Yankee Rebel", but that plane crashed on takeoff on 4 June 44. It is possible their new plane was called "Miss Yankee Rebel 2", but that is not clear. They crashed near Plovdiv, Bulgaria on 28 June 44. The MACR is often in error as to the crash site as it only reports what the other bomber crews saw when the plane left formation. If you read through the MACR, several of the crew statements, written after the war, talk about crashing in Bulgaria. The number of the machine gun you have must be with 6 digits, not 5. Please check again your number, the first 3 digits of all Browning .50 MG on board of that B-24H ( S/N 42-52701) must be 999...Probably the full number of your MG is 999035. There is another Browning from the same plane in Churen and another 2 in Perushtitsa... In the Aviation Museum in Plovdiv are some artifacts from this plane ( booster - pump ).Please contact the Museum, probably they would be interested. As for your idea, it sounds nice. It would be better you to find some witnesses in the region still alive , who knows the exact place where Lt. Crouchley was buried. Please send me private e-mail. Best Quote #9
