P-51D MC-R_ pics?
-

Does anyone out there have any pics of P-51D 44-13535? Code was MC- R and had "Chattanooga Choo-Choo" on the cowl. Pilot was Lt. Edward Pogue. About the closest to a picture is an aftermarket model airplane decal diagrahm. If anyone knows what colors "Chattanooga Choo-Choo" are, that would be helpful too.

Hi Ed..........there are at least 4 photos of 413535; it had 3 markings schemes at different times. I'll send a pic tomorrow as scanner is u / s. It was originally assigned to Lt. Richard Black as " Black's Bird" (his second); it had the patchy OD top camouflage common in the 20th and D-Day stripes under the fuselage. The name was ( probably ) red-yellow on nose. There was a black name panel on lower nose and the serial was removed from the tail. There was a black round rear-view mirror. When taken over by Pogue the camo was removed except for on the canopy frame ( apparently to show up his victory symbols ). It later had 7 swastikas in white discs on there, also a name panel as Black. The name was in script, looks like red with yellow shadows. By the end of the war all camo was gone , and the serial was marked in stencil style low down on the tail under the squadron square symbol. Still had the swastikas, but the finish was rather worn. I'll try to send a picture of scheme # 2. Nick

If you want to send both paint schemes, that'd be great. I'm currently working on a profile for "Chatanooga Choo Choo". I may try "Black's Bird" after I'm done. Here is a WIP shot of 44-13535... I admit, it takes more skill for the hand drawn/painted profiles like I've seen at LittleFriends.

Ed this shows the OD on the canopy; note also the bent leg on the letter " R "s , not straight. The mirror is the Spitfire type, the name panel has 6 lines of white lettering. Though a D-5-NA it has a fin fillet added; there is no aerial wire only the mast. Some had black bars only on the nose but this has white in between. The wing tanks are 108 gal. compressed paper. The white of the insignia has weathered to a light grey as was common. There are no black wing bands at this time. I'm pretty sure the name is red with a yellow shadow, as per other 20FG . Regards Nick
