P-51D - 4-72619 ?

I am trying to find out info on this aircraft. This was my Grandfathers plane while stationed on Iwo Jima. I have pictures and a tail number (472619) but can't find records of it. His name was CAPT Owen Jack Higgs. He flew with the 45th FS/15th FG.

Please contact me through here or at seanmooer@cybertrybe.com if you can lead me in the right direction to find out more about him and his plane.

Thank You
Sean Mooer

    Sean,

Those are interesting pictures indeed! I do not have any specific information on your grandfather, but would suggest that you contact Mark at www.7thfighter.com and see if he could help you.

Do you have any more pictures? Is there any possibility that I could get higher resolution scans of those pictures that you posted?

    Thanks,
    Ryan

That doesn't add up. Wrong pilot for starters but mainly the wrong FG and FS. This database says that "44-72619" was in the 458th FS/506th FG when it was actually in the 45th FS/15th FG and the markings in the picture confirm this. Plus his plane number was "53". This also corresponds with what I've researched so far. The 15th FG had plane numbers from 50-199 where as the 506th had plane numbers from 500-649. (If you look closely at the second picture you can see the “53” on the side below the canopy plus the very obvious markings of the 45th FS on the tail and wing – see below)

I would say maybe this is write considering he “could be” standing next to a different plane than his own with this tail number but I know this isn’t so because I have other pictures with him in the cockpit with the same markings, same plane number of “53”, same tail number of “472619” and his name “Capt Higgs” painted on the right side of the plane along with his crew chief’s name under his.

How accurate do we know this Accident report site to be? Has anyone else had conflicting data with this database with other aircraft?
