P-51 Tail
-

I am having a hard time finding the fighter group or squadron this P-51 belongs to. Does anyone know which group this is? I was able to find out that it crashed in Belgium during 1945 but that was it. Thanx!

Joe Baugher's list shows P-51 44-13283, 364FG 383FS as being downed on 1/10/45. George

Ben, Actually I belive it was a ship from the 1st Souting Force which at that time was part of the 364th FG. What doesn't jibe is the 5E should belong to the 385th FS, not the 383rd FS. "When the SFX moved to Honington as the 1st Scouting Force, the original cadre retained their 355th Fighter Group aircraft but converted to the code letters of the 364th Fighter Group Squadron to which they were attached. This was N2 (383FS), 5Y (384FS) and 5E (385 FS). In addition, they created a unique 1SF colour scheme. This consisted of a red spinner backed by a white nose band and a red border around the complete vertical and horizontal tail planes." The colors certainly correspond to the paint scheme of the 1st SF. Regrds, Hugh

Ben, Hugh is correct. This a/c was assigned to the 1stSF with elements attached to the 385thFS. If you want to know more about this unit check out Peter Randell's excellent web site dedicated to the Eighth USAAF at www.littlefriends.co.uk. Bob
