P-51 " Ruff Hustle "
-
08/21/2006 11:56:41 AM
P-51 " Ruff Hustle" and two other P-57 planes made an emergency landing (shortage of fuel) on an airstrip in Belgium begin 1945. One of the pilots was nicknamed 'Hot shot Charlie'. The planes did not had any color markings on noses and tails. My question is; if " Ruff Hustle " and those planes could have been belong to this fighter group (479th). Any info welcome.

The 479 FG had no group markings but squadron colours were on the rudder and the small lip of the carb intake (under the prop spinner) on some P-51's. Do you have a photo of these? If so do they show the code letters on the side? I will look in the 479th FG book I have when I get time. till then Rick

Johnny Rick 479th FG photographs at attachment extracted from the Little Friends website; 434th FS (L2) - lower right, 435th FS (J2) - upper left and 436th FS (9B but not visible) - upper right. Take what you like and leave the rest.... Andy [image]local://upfiles/10103/E49E0A70D8CC4B46A1F8E1F8D2C68A0D.jpg[/image]

Rick, Image at attachment extracted from Little Friends website Evidently 434th FS (L2) squadron tail rudder color was RED ; no joy on determining 435th FS and 436th FS squadron colors. Take what you like and leave the rest.... Andy [image]local://upfiles/10103/A215996F830A47D3A3C42D3E1576A1F7.jpg[/image]

Rick, Image at attachment extracted from Little Friends website. 435th FS (J2) squadron tail rudder color may have been YELLOW based on the image at attchment? Still no joy on the 436th FS (9B) tail rudder squadron color. Cmt - I've always liked the lines of the P-51B/C with a Malcom Hood - - if I ever get back to modeling, this dual seater will be the first one I do. Take what you like and leave the rest.... Johnny, Reference your "The planes did not had any color markings on noses and tails. My question is; if " Ruff Hustle " and those planes could have been belong to this fighter group (479th)." By a process of elimination, if the P-51s you mention were assigned to the 479th FG, they most probably belonged to the 436th FS (9B) which did not paint it's aircraft tail rudders after August 1944 (see below). Take what you like and leave the rest.... Good luck in the rest of your search. Andy [image]local://upfiles/10103/3DBB1495E74A498B97257D7D4A8339C8.jpg[/image]

Andy the 436FS had black-white check rudders in Oct. 1944 only-----all black from Nov. The nearest P-51 looks to have a light colour rudder (yellow ?) and the code could be J2. Nick

Appreciate the check/coloured rudders Nick but the 479th seem to have been pretty irregular with their application at times. Nothing definite and just offering this as a “maybe†for you all to play with but three P-51s from the 436th FS 479th FG landed at A-92 St. Trond (Manager) on 5 March 1945 if that’s your “Belgian airstrip†Johnny. Afraid that I only have one serial number and no code letters. Known serial is 44-14613 which was named “As-Cend Charlie†at one time and could well tie in with the pilot involved in this landing – Charles S Kreger. Bit close to “Hot Shot Charlie (I currently have it listed as assigned to Capt. Thomas E Myers but could be wrong). Other two pilots were Paul J Shonborn and Lewis C Smith. Hope that this does not complicate matters! Peter

Nick, I was thinking the same thing but you beat me to posting the thought! Definitely not dark enough to be Red; there's a contrast between the tail and the rudder (maybe NMF and YELLOW) that we both noticed so the three aircraft in Johnny's photograph might just be YELLOW ruddered 435th FS (J2) P-51s. Take what you like and leave the rest.... Andy [image]local://upfiles/10103/572EF907CCAC4F578C2D21D82676828C.jpg[/image]

The P-51D "Ruff Hustlel" was from the 435 FS 479 FG .It was the regular mount of Lt. William Pickering .If you look at the line up of three P-51D's if the first one is "ruff Hustler" it does have 2 kills under the wind screen which is how many Lt. Pickering had a total of 2 air victories. The middle one is J2- B which is Capt. Gates mustang so after looking at the photo more I would bet this was taken Oct. 18 1944 because Capt Gates, Lt Pickering and others landed in Belgium because of fuel shortages. J2-I the last on the left I have no info on it and the photo is not clear enough for me to see the name of it. Hope this helps and thanks for the photo's ,never seen these before. Not much in photo's and info on this fighter squadron. Rick
