P-51 Losses - April 26, 1945

Hi All,

I've recently had a request for information regarding the loss of 1/Lt William W Redus, O-767372 of the 45th Fighter Squadron on April 26, 1945.

Apparently he departed Iwo Jima on a B-29 escort mission.

I've checked the MACR database, and it appears that the 15th FG lost quite a few Mustangs that day:
44-63295 (MACR 14341)
44-63399 (MACR 14342)
44-63402 (MACR 14344)
44-63418 (MACR 14343)
44-63429 (MACR 14340)
44-63460 (MACR 14339)
The ABMC database lists the following personnell as declared dead on April 26, 1945:
2/Lt Emerson L Cyphers, O-692737 (45 FS) - KIA, Buried Honolulu
Capt Morton M Knox, O-799997 (45 FS) - MIA
1/Lt William W Redus, O-767372 (45 FS) - MIA
2/Lt Robert D Wray, O-774399 (45 FS) - MIA
1/Lt Clyde V Mangum, O-1549991 (78 FS) - MIA
2/Lt Wallace K Wayland, O-774379 (78 FS) - MIA
I was wondering if anyone out there was able to assist with matching up aircraft with pilots.

Incidentally, I have been unable to find any details of B-29 losses on this date.

    Daniel,
    B -29s Flew 11 Missions 4/26/45 - No Losses
Could account for high P - 51 Losses
There is a New Book out by Osprey Publishing:
    Long Range P -51s
Wish I could help more - not much out there on the 15th FG.

    Good evening gentlemen:

The Pacific area Mustangs have been a weak point in my research but I can match up 2 of the aircraft and pilots mentioned.

44-63295 was with Clyde V Mangum
44-63460 was with Wallace K Wayland

Both pilots were with the 78th FS

Hope that this helps a bit.   Ted51

Apparently Cyphers, Knox, Redus, and Wray were lost in weather. This is according to a handwritten note I have from a 45th Vet's son.

1st Lr. William Redus is a relative.  Do you have more information on his disappearance?  Thanks.

I'm looking for veterans, family members or historians who can help with information about the 15th Fighter Group in the very long-range (VLR) missions flown from Iwo Jima in 1945. This is for a serious, major historical project. If you think you might be able to help, don't hesitate to pick up the phone. I'd like to hear from you!
