Hello, I just read you question and also read Mike's answer, but his answer isn't correct. The P-51 you mentioned belonged to capt. Earl Fryer who was a member of the 55th Fighter Group, 38 th Squadron. His plane was named Spunktown. On the 8th of November 1944 capt. Fryer escorted with the 55th FighterGroup B 17 bombers to Merseburg near Osnabrück, Germany. In that area he was hit by Flak and he lost coolant from the engine. Together with two other pilots of his Squadon he tried to return to his base in Wormingford, in the U.K. The two pilots asked capt. Fryer permission to attack a German train beneath them. Capt. Fryer gave them permission and decided to fly alone to the U.K. When the train was attacked the two pilots never saw Capt. Fryer again. Flying over the Netherlands, capt. Fryer said his engine was bad running and he would try to bail out. "Tell my wife I'm O.K. " were his last words. Maybe at the last moment he decided to change direction from west to south. The southern part of Holland, so the the area south of the Rhine river was already liberated at that time. Just 3 miles before he was in that save area capt Fryer crashlanded. He was buried by the Germans near his plane. After the war his body returned to Boyertown, PH. Hans Hans Just some miles

MACR says where P-51 was last seen: Hilversum. Actual crash place was at Wageningen, roughly between Utrecht and Nijmegen, and indeed in a southernly direction (rather SE) from Hilversum.... Regards, Leendert
