P-47 Kansas Tornado - 12/22/2007 09:37:23 AM
P-47 Folks,  have any of you come across a P-47 with "Kansas Tornado" painted on the cowl? Have a photo of one with that printed and a painting of a Tornado on the cowl.  Pilot standing infront as your picture has. From the way he was dressed he could have been a pilot or mechanic.  The photo doesn't show any serial numbers.  Thank you,  Phillip

Phillip,

Most likely P-47D 42-26249 "Kansas Tornado II" operated by 405th FG/510th FS.
One of its pilots was Lt Howard J. Curran.

Regards,

Leendert

Phillip,

At  http://www.510fs.org/php-bin/4images/details.php?image_id=1740&sessionid=4fa2de0a0fc65a4cb13524082af2980c is mention, and a sketch,  of the loss of Captain Curran's P-47 'Kansas Tornado' which I presume was the precursor to 'Kansas Totnado II"?

In the for whatever it's worth category, based upon the sketch's aircraft  being coded 2Z-C and Captain Curran's biography at http://wing.chez-alice.fr/USAAF/405th_FG/Pilots_&_Nose_Arts_510th_FS.html I suspect  P-47 42-76237 may possibly have born the original 'Kansas Tornado' nose art.

Take what you like and leave the rest....

Andy
