RE: P47 392nd FS - 09/12/2007 09:00:34 AM
Hello,

Unfortunately I can't tell anything about this P47 of the 392nd FS. I can only tell you that the picture was certainly taken around April 1945. The 367th FG arrived to Frankfurt Eschborn in the beginning of April. They changed from P38 to P47 in February 1945 when they received enough P47.
As concerns the P38, I imagine that it is the 392nd FS Droopsnoot as the 3 Squadrons of the 367th FG kept their own Droopsnoot until the end of the war.
I know that the Squadron had also a L4 that was sometime used to give a flight to ground personnel (Doc Bleich, the 392nd FS surgeon flew for an hour in the L4 with Lt Hugh Hallman at the control when they were stationned in Stoney Cross, UK). The 392nd FS had also his own B26.

You will find in attachment the picture of a pilot of the 392nd FS. I don't know his name but the picture was taken at the end of the war. He has on his flight jacket the patch of the 392nd FS. This patch was issed at the end of the war when the group transitionned to the P47. I think that this pilot is the one at the control of the P38 on your picture.

Can you tell me the origin of the picture as well as the second one in the web site of the ARGA? Is the P38 on second picture from the 367th FG?

Regards,
Olliball

Hello,
Thanks for the reply and info! Both photo's were acquired on e-bay. The pilot at the controlls of a P-38 in the first photo(with the P-47 in the background) is Harris B Yates....according to the additional info given on e-bay. The other photo was taken somewhere in Germany. On the back of this photo is written: "Taken at the end of the second mission against the enemy over Leipzig and vicinity"
I do not know if this a/c is also a 367th FG a/c.
If you need a better copy than the ones on our website please let me know and i'll be happy to e-mail them to you in a better resolution.

Kind regards
Sander

Hello,

Yes, I would be very grateful to receive a better copy of the 2 photos.
As I told to Michel this morning in this forum section, Harris Yates survived the war but passed away on 27/12/1999 and lived in Arkansas. He joined the 392nd FS in February 1945.

Have a nice evening,

Olliball
