I'm looking to find out which field (or fields) was represented by 'R'... any help would be appreciated.

Hi Steve,

Well it has taken me about six hours of trying to get this reply to you.
All that I
kept getting was the reply box with the little round thing at the bottom left that just kept going round and round.

Still, now to your question.
R77 was Gablingen in Germany. The home of the 323rd Bomber Group in the late ww2 period.

A= US usage.
B= Mainly British usage.
Y= US and French usage of airfields taken by troops advancing from Southern France.
R= Airfields in Germany occupied by the USAAF.
All the best
Alex

Perhaps I wasn't very clear...

I'm looking for info as to which Stateside airfields may have used the code 'R'. This P-40N, coded 'R77', is a Stateside training bird.

Looking through some old threads here on the forum, I've discovered that Lemoore Field in California used 'R', but I believe that this P-40 is from a Third AF airfield.

However, thanks for the info you provided Alex. I seem to vaguely recall reading about the meaning behind the prefixes for various continental airfields in the ETO, but I'll be darned if I can remember where. Good info to know...

Hawk914:

I was not able to come up with the R code but here are a couple you can write down for future reference. The WCTC [West Coast Training Command] codes are hard to come by. You might try Craig @ AAIR on some of those codes.

A- Page Fld
D- Peterson Fld
E- Hillsborough AAF
H- Penallas AAF
L- Harding Fld
P- Foster Fld
T- Dale Mabry AF
W- Ft Sumpter AAF

This is a bit out of my scope of research but I tend to write down whatever comes my way.  Ted51

Steve        not my field but I've got a note here that " R+number " is Waycross AAF ( GA ) ( Third AF ).
Pity the shot is not a bit more right as the serial is under the wing, 3240--       ie. an N-20.

Nick, thanks for that... I'll add Waycross to my database and to the list of possibilities for this P-40's home field. I know what you mean, concerning the serial... aside from trying to connect airfields with codes, I'm also trying to document as many individual P-40s as possible. And photos like this are quite frustrating in that regard...

Ted, thanks for the list... there were a few there I'd not come across before. I've been meaning to contact Craig at AAIR for a while to see what info he has along these lines. Just never get around to it...

To both of you, Nick and Ted, would you happen to have references or sources for the codes you provided here? My current database on this subject is somewhat small, but I hope to make it available on the web in the future and I'd like to be able to provide cross-references and such, wherever possible.

Thanks again fellas... including you Alex. Although the info you provided is not what I was looking for, I, like Ted51, make a note of as much of this stuff as I can when I come across it.

Steve.....I'm just like Ted, I note down this sort of detail when it turns up in a book or web-site; I've got a list of about 60 codes but couldn't pin most of them down, never thought I would need to.
A few are 2-letter bomber tail codes.
There's quite a bit on WIKI about the GA fields. You might like to try Googling Waycross.
I know I've seen another "R" P-40 , maybe in one of my group histories.
Sorry can't help more        I'll keep you posted                 Regards  Nick

Thanks all... Waycross it is.

You know, I'd looked at that area on the starboard wing a couple times and couldn't make anything out... now I can see it plain as day. Go figure... chalking that one up to the fact that I'm overdue for glasses... thanks Martin.

Mike, thanks for mentioning that book... I'll have to see if I can grab a copy someday.

Nick, I'd like to see your list, if possible. Maybe that'll light a fire and speed my plans to get this stuff published on the web.

Thanks again all...
