P-40K-1 16th FS - 01/30/2006 03:38:01 PM
I am building a model of a friend of mine, Bill Band, who flew the above , while in China, 1942-43. I have several photos from his family and book(Warriors Who Ride the Wind), all black and white. I am trying to determine the color of the inside of the shark mouth (appears to be one color, without a tongue) -possibly all black or all red? I am also trying to get his tail number. He passed away in December. Can anyone help me?
Thanks!

Bill,

See the article (with website address) and picture at attachment; you can probably go to school on this 16th FS P-40E.

Take what you like and leave the rest....

Thanks Andy - you are a gentleman and scholar! I will try to send you several b&w photos, but not sure how to attach to this message. If I can't , I could e-mail .
Thanks again,
Bill

I hate to break your bubble, but the 16th Fighter Squadron was not part of the Flying Tigers in China. The 23rd Fighter Group (Flying Tigers) had the 74th, 75th and 76th Fighter Squadrons assigned. The 16th Fighter Squadron was assigned to the 51st Fighter Group.

Thanks. No bubble broken. I'm aware the 23rd consisted of the 74th, 75th, and 76th, and Bill was not an original AVG Flying Tiger. In Bill's book, Tex Hill wrote a dedication, which stated that the 16th was under "operational control" of the 23rd FG, which he commanded. Apparently, Chennault had the 10th AF in India send the 16th, in June-July 42 , to train with the 23rd in Kunming, and never gave them back.Bill spent the entire 15 months in the 16th, 51st FG, as you said.
Thanks again for the info! Did you get the e-mail re the photos?
Bill
