Jim - there should be an accident report. You can request it from AAF archives at Maxwell.
    Cheers

Thanks.  I do have a copy of that.  I also have Bill Marshall's book of the 355th FG history but it doesn't cover Stateside at all--just the war diary.  My goal is to try to find the crash site and possibly write an article for the local paper.  It is also my hope that maybe the town of Dalton  will be interested in having some kind of memorial for Lt. Marxson.

Sorry, what I meant was, I would like to know if anyone here knew him or of his crash.  Like I said, I am thinking about writing an article and am doing research on him.  After reading the crash report and learning where his home of record was (LaFayette, IN--thanks to Tony Mireles) I surmise he was going home for the weekend since his crash occurred on Friday in dismal weather.  He was very persistent in going.

        Any help would be appreciated.

The local newspaper, The Daily Citizen, might be able to help you out ~ http://www.northwestgeorgia.com/

Thanks.  I got in touch with the local public library there too.  I thought about the newspaper, but the listing I found on the net didn't cover the same time period.  I will look again though, I might have looked in the wrong heading or something.  Thanks again!

1st Lieutenant Theodore B Marxon assumed command of 358FS, relieving Major Morris C. Crossen on 2nd Feb-1943.   On the same day the future squadron CO's that started cambat ops, namely Edward "Jonesy' Szaniawski and Joe Williams assumed command of 357FS and 354FS respectively

On 5 February, he was KIFA on a cross country flight in Georgia.  Raymond Myers then assumed command and led the 358FS until late June 1944.

On 11 Fe, the 355th got their first P-47C-5RE's which they took to England with them on June 30, 1943.

The 358 lost two more pilots KIFA and one badly injured before leaving for England..two 1st LT and one 2nd diminished the 358 a little bit perhaps as they finished a distand 3rd behind the 354 and 357 in total scores.

              Regards,

              Bill Marshall

                Mr. Marshall,
Thank you very much!  That is exactly the kind of info I was hoping for.  As yet, I haven't had a chance to go looking for the crash site--except on Google Earth.  I'm fairly certain there won't be much left as there is a decent amount of development in the area that I suspect.
BTW, I have really enjoyed your book--thanks again.  Take care.

                Regards,
                Jim

There is a marker on the Pinhoti Trail Section 12 (Dug Gap) that reads:

                  LT. THEODORE MARXON, A.A.F.
KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY
                  FEB. 5, 1943

From the North, you enter the trail at Forest Service Road 202.

THANKS!!!  That is great.  I am also very glad to know someone placed a marker for him.  I'll have to check it out.  Much appreciated.
