P-38 in 33d FG
-

Hi, I'm looking info about when the P-38s entered in service in 33d FG in CBI. Did whole squadrons convert to P-38 or did they fly a mix of P-38 and P-47. Thanks Max

I am getting this info from volume II of The Fighting 33rd Nomads. After arriving in the CBI at Karachi, India, in March 1944 the 59th FS was given P-40N's and sent to China. The 58th and 60th recieved P-47D's at the end of that month. It looks like the 59th then shifted to P-47's in June of 44. Next it appears that in November of 1944 the 58th FS began transitioning to the P-38 with the 59th and the 60th following suit till the whole Group was a "Twin Engine Fighter Group" by March 1st, 1945. I skimmed through the book to find this so will stand corrected if others have better info. The book states that they got this information from the Combat Digest of the 33rd FG which I also have a copy of and could make that available to you if you wish. George Dively, the 33rd historian, is a better resource for this period as his father flew with them at that time. I hope this helps a little. JJM (gary)

Thank you for the answers. Interesting that the 59th FS flew first with P-40s. Terry, the 459th FS flew P-38 from 1943, but was assigned to 33d FG only in 1945. Probably this is the reason why the first losses were in june. I think that previous losses were listed under the 80th FG. Max

Thank you very much. Interesting that two A-24B were lost in 1945. I guess that they were trainer or liason planes. MAx

JJM: Hope you are still a member.....I just joined this forum today. I noticed you mentioned the Combat Digest of the 33rd FG during WWII. I'm looking for more information on my grandfather's unit in 1942-45. He was a medical corpsman for the "59th Ftr Sq of the 33rd Ftr Gp". I believe it was also called the 59th Pursuit Interceptor Squadron. I'm trying to find a squadron patch as well as photos of his unit (desperate search of photos of him in WWII). Might this digest have any specific info or pictures of his squadron? Thanks
