Doug, Have been unable to find this name in any of my sources. As you posted this in the 490th forum are we to assume this a/c was destined for the 490th? The 490th flew B-24's from 6/44 to 9/44 then was converted to B-17's. Is it safe to assume that in October of 44 this would have been a B-17? Where did you find this name? Do you have ANY additional information? Do you have a personal connection to this a/c? Hal

My Father flew this plane in 10/44 from Savannah to NY to Bangor Maine to England. I have his Bomber jacket with this name on it. He was assigned to the 849thBG in the 490. I doubt that he flew this plane in combat as I understand the new ships went to the experienced crews. I have discovered 2 MACR and corresponding aircraft ID #s for the day he was shot down but do not know how to take this info further. Any ideas / suggestions? THANKS

Doug, Give us whatever you have and let us run with it. What is the date he was shot down? What a/c serial numbers or tail numbers do you have? What are the MACR numbers? What is your fathers name? Was he the pilot? If not, who was the pilot of his crew? There is a lot of talent on this forum, give them something to work with and you'll probably get some answers. Can you post a picture of his jacket? Regards, Hal

FANTASTIC! I have just discovered today that of the 2 MACRs for that date and raid that MACR # 11588 = serial # 43-38132 "OLD PATCH" and that MACR # 11585 = serial # 43-38943 and apparently the plane in which he was co-pilot on and was abandoned over Belgium. His name was Charles I. Thompson Jr. All his memoirs mention about the pilot washis being refered to as "Ward". This was his (my father's) 12th mission and the aforementioned jacket has 12 bombs painted under the plane (which has the correct markings on it!). Could it possible that he was assigned to the same plane he shuttled over from the U.S. but in a co-pilot position? I will try to obtain a pic of the jacket. THANK YOU again! Doug

Doug, Based on the MACR numbers you've provided he was shot down on January 10, 1945. Does this agree with your records? Out of curiosity, what was his fate? Did he survive, was he a POW, did he return to his group? Hal

YES ! this corresponds perfectly. He bailed, was wounded, met up with US ground forces, and was sent stateside. He passed away 10/14/92. My son & I had visited the "Mighty 8th " museum on 7/5/07 and have learned SO much! I have, as I mentioned earlier, transcripts of his missions as well as an auto-biographical narrative which in addition to "fratured" memories of "war stories" is all I have to relate to his grandson.

Doug, There was another 490th BG plane lost that day. This plane was 43-38157 which failed to return and landed on the continent due to flak. The pilot was 2Lt Charles W. Ward. There was 1 KIA, 3 POWs and 5 RTD. Unfortunately, my reference does not give a crew list other than Ward. The MACR 11548 covers this plane and crew and is available free of charge by contacting Lynn.Gamma@MAXWELL.AF.MIL. Your father is not on the crewlist for MACR 11588 and I don't have the list for MACR 11585. Vic

Vic, Thank you for the info! I have sent an email to Ms GAmma with 3 MACRs that apply to this date - hopefully this will clear things up a bit as its a a little "muddy" right now! Doug

Doug, You may have to exercise a little patience waiting for the MACRs but they will come. If your dad was flying with Ward on that day, the MACR may have a lot of testimony since there were 3 POWs and 5 RTD. The POWs testimony would have been added after they were repatriated. Hopefully, there will be a lot of information but you never know what to expect with MACRs. Vic

The Charles W. Ward crew arrived at the 490th BG on November 7, 1944. It was composed as follows: Charles W. Ward pilot Charles H. Thompson co-pilot Gilbert M. Kushel navigator Charles F. Finley Jr. engineer Edward J. Kovach radio operator Harold W. Blackman gunner Leopold B. Maryasi gunner Robert B. Pratt gunner Merle S. Schutt gunner Schutt was KIA on March 17, 1945. Perhaps a 'white page' search will lead you to one of these men, who can tell you more about the events. Best regards, IVo de Jong

This is the correct crew & flight. 1 Correction, Co-Pilot was Charles I Thompson. This is through the AMAZING work of Eric Swain, to whom I am so grateful !!! However, I am STILL trying to find ANYTHING regarding "Our Lady". The Might 8th Museum does have a single refernce to this plane but nothing more than it's name being listed... This plane and it's fate is the last major missing piece of my father's story. ANYONE?
