RE: Other 35thFG P-400 Losses PNG Roundups - 12/22/2007 09:15:18 PM
P-400 contribution:

BX-170, Burhus, John L, 420830, Tontouta airfield , Service # O-023472, 67PS ?, 347PG ? (not sure on these) 13AF, DNB, Condemned Aug 30, 1942,  September 1. 1942. “Yesterday our former squadron commander (69th BG, B-26 ) of a month ago, Captain Burris, (sic) was killed in a P-400 fighter (lend lease el cheapo version of the P-39) at Tontouta airfield about 15O miles away. He was testing the aircraft and after takeoff the Curtis Electric “uncontrollable “propeller ran away and he lost so much power that he couldn’t make a turn back to the field and tried to set it down in a small field but lacked the flying speed and crashed in flames. The fire fighters couldn’t get near the wreckage for 20 minutes.our squadron is to fly formation over his grave today at 2:15 p.m. following services”. Hometown: McIntosh County, OK

AH-573, Wg Cdr W.S. Jenkins, 420211, Boscombe Down, Wilts, A & AEE TP, RAF, DNB, Crashed Feb 11, 1942 from Boscombe Down.  Engine failure just after takeoff. Pilot killed.AH573 was one of the first Airacobras ( Bell Model 14s ) which arrived in July 1941 and went to the Aeroplane and Armament Experimental Establishment ( A & AEE) at Boscombe , others  went to  the Air Fighting Development Unit ( AFDU ) at Duxford ( where 601 was stationed ) . AH573 was used for trials with various exhaust systems ( 601s Airacobra Is had fish-tail ports fitted over the original kidney types) . By the time it was lost in Feb. ,601 Sqn. had finished operations and the month before moved up north to Acaster Malbis (Yorkshire) still persevering with their Airacobras; they gave them up in March and converted to Spitfire Vs. The pilot was probably RAF but possibly civilian as there were many at Boscombe.I think the P-400 designation was for those either transferred from the British or retained by the AAF ; they had a 20mm cannon and 6 x 0.303 m/gs. February 11, 1942
TAKE-OFF POINT: Not yet known
CRASH LOCATION: Boscombe Down, Wilts
AIRCRAFT TYPE & SERIAL: Bell Airacobra Mk I
CREW FATALITIES: Wg Cdr W.S. Jenkins, A&AEE TP
PURPOSE OF TEST FLIGHT: —
ACCIDENT DETAIL: Engine failed at 600ft after take-off, pilot attempted to return but lost control and spun-in on to airfield.
