Old B-17 and B-24 pictures found
-
08/10/2008 05:26:25 PM
I found a early picture of an early B-17 in flight in a antique store. Looks like a promotional picture from the manufacturer. The tail number is 25234, that is the only marking except for the white star in the blue background of the USAAF on the right lower wing and right side. Small dorsal gun openings, no nose gun. Nice Picture over white capped mountains. I bought it. Found three group pictures of a B-24 on the ground at it's base, looks like North Africa. The plane name was "Kick-A-Poo". All three with crew, but look to be different men. The third one might be a different model and the nose art isn't visible. No serial or other marking numbers seen. I didn't buy those, they are still at the flea shop. Any ideas? Kelly

Kelly, Try posting the image(s) and ask for any information some of our members might be able to supply. Bob

Unfortunately I have no way to scan until the work week..... and I didn't buy the B-24 pictures (expensive). I just thought if any family came forward of that crew I'd let them know where they are. As soon as my wife can scan the B-17 I'll post it.

Kelly, According to Joe Baughers list 42-5234 was a B-17F-40-BO. It was assigned to the RAF as a Fortress II, number FA707. It ditched off the Azores on July 26, 1944. Hal

Kelly, As for the B-24, found this pic on the B-24 Best Web, but not sure it's what you've found (B-24D-CO, 41-11768). You are right about the prices, but there are times when you find just the right item. Any other info or a scan would be helpfulif you want more info. Good hunting! Best Regards! Steven

I have a picture of 25234. My father crewed a B-25 that was assigned to Maj. Gen. Orvil A. Anderson, the first Commandant of the Air War College. They visited the Boeing factory in July 1948 (I'm assuming on the date, he told me he saw the second B-47 come off the assembly line and its first flight was July 21, 1948). Boeing gave him the picture of 25234, apparently it was a stock photo of theirs.
