Odd smoke formation in bomber stream. What is it ?

Found this picture online, and ... anyone know what the smoke trails crossing the aircraft contrails might be ? Rockets ? Flak of some kind ? The puffs hanging down at regular intervals is really odd to me.  I'm stumped.

Strange indeed. My guess would be contrails dissipating over time at such a height but I'm far from an expert.

I think they just contrails also, perhaps from fighter escorts.  It think these pictures have something similar, the  odd  "puffs" effect.

I think this may be the same picture, only shown "right side" up.

I think these contrails were  produced by water vapor in the engine exhaust (as opposed to the change in air pressure over the wings) and these were piston engines.   The exhaust would not be as "smooth/continuous" as a jet engine.  That may create the start of the "puff" effect which gets exaggerated as it disperses.

its prop wash in the contrails, it looks so prominent in the picture because its alot closer to the camera then the forts are. You can see it in these pics from B-17's.

Yes, contrails.  However, to me they look as though they are beyond the Fortresses -- you can see the newly formed contrails of the Forts overlay the contrails in question.  The contrails in question are dispersing as they have been in place for several minutes (or longer).

Mystery solved. As many pics I've looked at with contrails, I never saw ( or maybe just didn't notice ) this pattern. Most pictures are not as close-up of the contrails as these are. Kinda looks like the " puff " effect only lasts for a very short while, then smoothes out into the contrail I'm used to seeing. From some of the Fold pics, it looks like the contrail is smoothed out several 100 feet behind the planes, so it must disperse to a smooth pattern pretty quickly, considering the short distance the plane would have flown by that time.
    Thanks fellas !
