Now I need help finding a Pilot
-

10 April 1945 “My Achin’ Back†was flown by 2LT Donald G. Lowther, 0-72213, in Cobweb Red Section (Number 2) on a bomber escort mission. Breaking formation they left the bombers to RTB and observe 8 Mustangs just leaving Wittstock Aerodrome. Flight Lead, Major Gerald Montgomery, made one pass to test for flak and then lead the section down. Making 5 passes, they left 4 aircraft burning. Kills recorded in Squadron history are: Maj. Montgomery: 1 Me-410 1LT Jack McFadden: 1 Ju-88 2LT Don Lowther: 1 Ju-52 2LT Robert Miller: 1 U/I enemy aircraft, possible Me-108 Mission was Squadron’s 407th operational sortie. Briefed at 1100, Mission # F.O. 1936A – Penetration, Target and Withdrawal Support for B-24s of 4th Task Force. Bomber Target was Rechlin-Larz Airdrome near Muritz Lake. Entered Indian Country at St. Peter (west of Kiel) at 1415, 20,000 feet. Uneventful raid, left bombers at Dummer Lake at 1600. Out of Indian Country at Ijmuiden at 1700 hours, 8,000. Can anybody help me find any information or, even contact information if he's still alive, 2LT Lowther? I really want to restore a Mustang to the one he was flying that day. Skipper Hyle "My Achin' Back"

D Lowther is actually a female and the other number didn't anwser. Zig, since you live close if I could beg for some help? I'm going to do all the normal stuff, National Archieves, Military Personnel Records, etc. The plan is; since I found the mission he flew that logged the only kill of QP-D, to recreate her. Eventually I'd like LT Lowther's information in front of the aircraft -- as I stated before, this is the Air Corps equivilant of the dogface that helped win the war (not a Cripes-A-Might or Old Crow -- although I did think of Scat VII because Robin was such a studly fighter pilot). Was he the citizen soldier of Steve Ambrose or did he stay in? Recalled to Korea? Never fly again or retire from the airlines? I know a P47 pilot that spent his career designing dental equipment.... The picture is of "Glamorous Gal" flown by Chris Baranaskas of Long Island. Glamorous Gal was his grandfather's Mustang.
