New pictures of the 310th BG in the MTO during WWII
-
10/22/2004 06:18:51 PM
I have recently digitized 50 photographs taken by my father (Marion L. Hall) while he served as an aircraft mechanic and engine specialist with the 310th BG / 380th BS in the MTO during WWII. To the best of his memory (he’s still alive and well, I’m pleased to say), all of these pictures were taken at or near the 310th BG base at Ghisonaccia-Gare, Corsica during 1944/45; however, he also served with the unit in North Africa, so there may be some overlap. He has identified some of the individuals shown in the pictures, but many are now just familiar faces without names; nonetheless, those of you who served (or had fathers who served) with the 310th BG in the MTO might find them interesting (who knows – you might even find a treasure!). Aircraft shown in the pictures (only one of which is currently included in Steve Pace’s partial list of MTO B-25s (http://members.northrock.bm/~ehetzel/b25names.html)) include: “Goin’ My Way†(noted by Pace), “Dottie,†“Sky Larkin,†“Dry Run,†“Rosmarea,†“Dykie the Vth,†“Wet Dreams,†“Sleepy time gal!†and “Thunder Head.†Some of the people who are shown (or referred to) in the pictures include: Marion L. Hall (my dad), T/Sgt. Elton T. Larson (Crew Chief on “Goin’ My Way†and apparently (judging from the number of pictures of him that I found) a close friend of my dad’s), 1st Lt. Edward J. (last name not visible) (listed as A/C Commander on “Goin’ My Wayâ€), Lt. C. W. (?) Strunk (listed as Co-Pilot on “Dykie the Vthâ€), Lt. W. H. Cruise (listed as Co-Pilot on “Wet Dreamsâ€), Lt. Frank M. Scherer (listed as A/C Commander on “Sleepy time gal!â€), T/Sgt. Henry C. Sieffert (Crew Chief on “Sleepy time gal!â€), Reger (first name unknown), Gonzales (first name unknown), 1st Lt. L. J. Smith (listed as crew member (Bombardier/Navigator?) on “Thunder Headâ€), Reginald (“Reggieâ€) Sproud and Emory Disston (related to Disston Saw family). These pictures are all saved in a standard JPEG format (< 100 KB each) and may be obtained on a CD or via email (jmhall@llnl.gov) if desired. Also, if you find anyone that you recognize in these pictures or if you happen to have any other pictures that relate to these, please let me know!!! Thanks, JH

I am interested in the same group that you speak of and have some pictures that were taken in Italy. Because my father's discharge papers only list the last unit he was with I can't actually be sure that he was in the 310/380 but I do know that he was at the same places. I have a picture of him and Oscar Nathans in front of a C-25G named Hot Lips and newspaper clippings of him giving a SGT Jack H Sattler from Nebraska. Oscar Nathans was from New Jersey and died last year. Also, another name was Ralph Pace. I think they were all mechanics. I know that my day was and one other person I have a photo of my father with is Gus P. Smith. Thie picture of Gus and my day (Noble Ray Young) was taken on June 8, 1945 in Sienna Italy. I would be happy to share any of the pictures with anyone who wants them. I have tried to get papers regarding his service, but that has been sent back to me twice. I have his discharge papers, but they list only the unit he was assigned to to send him back to the states and it is one that is stationed in England and he was never there. He was in the Naples-Foggia campaign and also the Rome Arno campaign. Since I don't actually have a copy of those papers in my hand at the moment, I may be wrong on some of the info. If anyone has any information that might be of assistance, I would appreciate it. Thanks lacy

Hi lacy! You may be able to find info on your dad in one of the four 310th Bomb Group squadron histories. Click on the link to the squadron files at: http://57thbombwing.com/news.php Note that the files are large and may take a long time to view and/or download. Best regards, VJ White
