Need help finding MACR
-
07/15/2007 07:17:20 AM
My grandfather (Capt. Davis) was shot down June 28th, 1944. Another pilot (Lt. Swam) also bailed out on the same mission. See attached flight intel. report for more details. The MACR db only lists one report (#6451) for this date. I did order it about one week ago. I would like to know how I can find the other one in case it is the for for my grandfather's plane. With help from the Chinese, he was able to walk out and returned to base in about three weeks. He was with the 14th AAF, 23rd FG, 118th Tactical Recon Squadron.

Tex; Mike Stowe ( accireport@comcast.net <accireport@comcast.net> ) has access to microfilm of MACRs. You might give him a try and see if he can come up with what you are looking for. There is a charge for his services. A first cousin of my wifes was a B-17 gunner and lost. None of the family ever had any details of his loss. We recently ordered the MACR from Mike. It will consist of about 25 pages and include some photographs, our cost was $51.00. Just in case you may be interested. Jack

If your grandfather flew his plane back and landed in or at a friendly base or in friendly territory as the report seems to indicate is possible, he was not necessarily MIA and no MACR would have been made. You would need more data of course.

He was shot down and MIA. I have been in contact with a gentleman that was in the 118th with him. He said the squadron was "shocked at the apparent loss of one of the squadron's most popular members so soon." They didn't find out that he was walking back until a week later. I have attached a copy of my grandfather's report of his walkout. I'll wait and see what is in the MACR I requested. If it isn't him, I'll contact Mike Stowe. Thanks

Yep, Should be one, but don't be surprised if it is missing. I have four crews of the 459th BG where there should be an MACR and there isn't one to be found. It may be that there are still files not cataloged as at least one researcher at Maxwell has suggested.. Good Luck, hope your search is successful. The report you attached sounds like a debriefing report. Whereever the source of that was , maybe the originals can help in locating an MACR if was in the same files.

He did not fly any more missions. He was reassigned to 14th headquarters and then sent back to the states in August 1944. I'm pretty sure this was due to his injuries. He did not return to flying status until January 1945. I received a letter from NARA saying that they couldn't locate a MACR for my grandfather.
