A P-39 was lost on/or about 7/11/42, belonging to the 40th Fighter Squadron, 35th Fighter Group. I would like if someone could give me the serial number of this plane. the name of the pilot is 2nd Lt. Orville A. Kirtland. Thank You: John

Gordy...Thank you very much on your information about this plane being a P-400 instead of a P-39. By any chance to you have the serial number of this aircraft. By the way to you know Bruce D. Hoy who was the Curator of the Aviation, Maritime and War Branch, National Museum and Art Gallery, Papua New Guinea. If you do could you give him my E-Mial address, he will know me from when I work with CIL-HI. We exchange information on air crash sites so that we could go and recover the remains of missing air crews. Again thanks alot for your information. John

John, that is the serial Mate,......BW117 . These P-400 ships had the RAF Camo of Earth and Green, with sky unders,..their American equivilant of course P-400's had RAF Serials (British Purchasing Commission Aircraft were ordered as such when purchased by cash) There is no USAAF FY Serial as per Kittyhawk1s AH571- etc Whereas Lend Lease had, in most cases, both during this period. The P-39D-1-DEs were actually ordered per lend-lease, for the RAF, but after their P-400 service in RAF,..they didn't want them, so it seems no RAF Serial. Still seeing if the RAF issued Serials for them,,...doubtful. Check with Michael Claring Bould if he has it per Email address,.. Best Gordy

Sorry John, I was in remiss Contacted him once a life time ago by mail, back in 1989 per a F/A 18 colour scheme (A21-7 I remember), but not since. I think he was in Darwin then, not Port Moresby Michael knows him as do alot of others. His input into book on the 3rdBg I've read, etc. I tend to travel solo on my research, apart from a few dear friends. I perfer the original source docs over repeated stories that loose details or gain them through accumulation of years. Talk to you soon,..into P-38s and F-5s currently by accident for you per PNG Best Gordy
