Navigator David McCarty 491st

I'm a member of the 99BGHS but trying to help a family member of David McCarthy find more information. His family tells me he trained on the Reluctant Dragon number 286. David was in the 491st which tells me he was on a B24, correct? Family says David was the only survivor when shot down and they believe he was a POW in Luft 1. I will continue to search the s/n database for a B24 s/n 286 and associated MACR in the meantime if anyone has any information about or knew David McCarty please email me at ianderkin@aol.com.

This information is from Project Bits and Pieces and conflicts with some that you have given here. For what it is worth I found the following:
Lt David W. McCarty was flying as navigator on 41-29464 "The Unlimited" of the 491st Bomb Group, 853rd Squadron on 26 Nov 1944 when it failed to return due to German fighters and crashed at Pattensen, Germany. There were four KIA and fuve POWS. The crew was composed of the following:
Lt Charles W. Stevens Jr (P) POW
Lt Brice E. Thornburg (CP) POW
Lt David W. McCarty (N) POW
S/Sgt Troy L. Ryan (NT) KIA
T/Sgt Joseph L. Boyer (TT) KIA
T/Sgt Joseph P Dechaine (RO) POW
S/Sgt John D. McJimsey Jr (LW) POW
S/Sgt Elmore W. Shepherd (RW) KIA
    S/Sgt Elmer Steinman (TG) KIA

This was a very bad day for the 491st Bomb Group as they lost 15 AC and crews on this mission.

Thanks for the extremely fast response. Anyway to access MACR 10763 from this database? I forwarded your information to the family. I'm sure they will be very pleased and I will tell them how to find this database as well! Thanks again 491st!

I'm sorry but you will have to get the MACR from Maxwell. Don't be discouraged at the wait. It may take several weeks depending on how busy they are but it will arrive sooner or later. I have received them in as little as two weeks but it sometimes takes longer.

I have a D W McCarty graduating from bombardier school at Big Springs, TX class 43-17. May or may not be him. Some men were dual rated as bomb/nav. If you find that he was a bombardier, then contact me at my bombardier website: hfhmsite@safeplace.net.

    Thanks!

My father was Charles W. Stevens, pilot of The Unlimited.  Do you have any info on crash of if any of the surviving crew are still alive?

    Joseph P Dechaine

Born 1921 in Maine.   I found his POW record and his enlistment record, but I can't find anything recent for him.  Nothing comes up on the SSDI with his birth year.
