Mystery Insignia - 10/02/2007 02:33:44 PM
Attached is the insignia in question.

A bunch of us are trying to qualitatively determine the original unit
for which this insignia was designed. We are 'pretty sure' that this
image belonged to either the 434th, 435th or 436th Fighter Squadrons
prior to the 479thFG converting to the P-51.

If anyone within the this forum has a WWII era photo containing the
image of this insignia, i.e. A-2 Flight Jacket, signage, etc., we would
sure appreciate it if you would scan and post it.

Keeping our fingers crossed.

Bob

The insignia in question was the second, unapproved squadron patch of the 435 Fighter Squadron. It was created and drawn by cartoonist Leon Schlesinger of Warner Bros. Cartoons, Inc., Hollywood California. It was developed at the request of squadron member Captain Albert M. Myers while the squadron was training at Oxnard, Calif. The significance of the insignia is that it portrays the type of airfcraft then in use by the squadron.

Ray,

Do you know where I might locate any period photographs showing this insignia?

You mentioned that this was the second unauthorized insignia of the 435thFS.
Do you happen to have an example of the first insignia?

Thanks,
Bob
