Monogram B-24J Liberator Kit.
-
12/11/2007 11:49:00 AM
Hi I am hoping someone can help me as i have been rather silly!! I have a Monogram 1/48th scale B-24J Liberator kit which i have had for a while and have just got round to making a start on it. The trouble is that having a family time is rather short in the time i can spend on building it and can only do a bit here and a bit there. Somehow i have managed to lose the instructions!! Is it possible that someone has a copy of these instructions and can send them to me please?? If so i can send my e-mail address in a 'PM' so they can be sent via e-mail. I am converting it into a B-24H and hoping to model 42-52532 2S - K 'Virgo' of the 384th BS, 486th BG. Thankyou for your help. Regards Chris.

Chris, I have the same kit, been sitting on a shelf for 4 years. Can't seem to find the time to start it. Give me a couple of days and I'll scn the instructions for you. I want to build mine as a J 170 so I've been looking for a A6 front turret. PM me with your email and I'll get it of to you as soon as I can. John

I've been looking for a A6 front turret. John, Use a RevellMonogram B-24 Rear A-6 Turret in the front turret position to approximate the A-6 type front turret. You might have to buy another kit. Good luck P-40 Pete

Hi Mike Thanks for that. I have the Freeman book but not the Valant book. Are the pictures the same in both? There is also some on the 486th BG site, one with the John Macgill crew. Regards Chris.

To both of you, Give me an address and I'll mail you a set of instructions and/or an extra turret. I have extras on some stuff and instructions from half a dozen kits. I don't need them any more to build one anyway. Also, you can get extra parts from Revell if you go to their website.

General question: I'm building a model of my father's B-24. Where can I get a sheet of the correct sized black numbers for the a/c serial numbers? Any suggestions? Chris, John beat me to the offer. Good luck with your kit. Ken

Ken Microsoft Decal sheet MS48-1147 USAF/USAAF 45degree black stencil numbers 24in, 12in, 6in, 3in, 1/48th scale $10.25 Any hobby shop should have or be able to order, or you could yourself from Microsoft. Another option I've used is sheets of dry-transfer decals you can find at large office supply stores. You just have to figure out the size and font style you require and look thru their sheets.

In my above post to Ken, can ya'll tell how long I been sitting in front of my computer ??? It's NOT Micro soft decals, it is Micro scale decals !! http://www.microscale.com/ Click on " Military Decals " Go to page 8 ..... MS48-1147, 1/48th scale black USAAF number decal sheet is there. If you need black alphabetic code letters, page 9 has MS48-1155, 1/48th USAAF letters. I just hope when I go to bed, I don't dream about either Microsoft or Microscale, but some nose-art babe .... sigh ...

Man! That Bill Gates is into everything!... Thanks guys. I remembered that someone had decals out with serial nos. but I couldn't find them in an initial foray tot the websites. Appreciate the help. I need 1:72 as well. I assume they make them for that scale as well. Ken

Hi Ken Both 1/72nd and 1/48th scales should be easily available for the serial numbers that you are looking for. Usually just a case of changing the '48' to '72' at the beginning of the product number. Now i know why Bill Gates has a few pounds/dollars more than me!! Actually probably millions more!! Regards Chris.

Mark, I usually don't go onto the "modelling" sub-forum, bu was surfing a bit today to get some ideas on model plane building. I have not done this since childhood (plastic, balsa), but I have three boxed kits waiting on my quickly approaching retiremen. (I have a Monogram B-24J 1:48, an Academy B-24M and an Academy PB4Y-1, oth of which are 1:72 scale). From the sound of your post, I suspect that Monogram's are not necessarily the best kits, but I wouldn't know. I do have a rather nice collection of die cast display pieces, both 1:72 and 1:48 scales, which I use for display and presentations at the former FO WR Plant where I am currently employed in the GM WR Plant. The ones I have by "Nose Art" are: B24M Million Dollar Baby, B24D The Squaw, B24D The Strawberry Bitch, B24H Pistol Packin Mama, B-24D (MOD) Sky Witch, B24J Dragon and his Tail, B24J Booby Trap, B24J Michigan, B24J Sleepy Time Gal, and B24H (a Mickey) Yellow Nose Monster. Hopefully I'll get some detailing ideas by studying these A/C's. I really liked your display of Libs on the "tarmac." Best Regards! Steven Chris, Sounds like you got what you needed from other posters! I may be making more use of the sub-forum going forward with my modelling (see quote above). I also have a boxed 1:48 scale F4U Corsair (Smithsonian) from 25 years ago to go along with my 3 Libs. You are right, "time" is the factor! I've probably lost a lot of the "knack" for modelling, and if I don't get around to it, there's always e-bay! Best Regards! Steven

Hi Steve Yes, Glenn very kindly sent me a set of the instructions for the Monogram kit. Time is definitely the key. Had plenty before getting married and then having a family!! I also have a number of kits still waiting to be done. One day .....! Regards Chris.

I'm curious. I have read many times that the nose turret for the Monogram B-24J is about 15% too large. Is there an after-market substitution for it at the correct size? I know Koster had turrets for the PB4Y conversion. Steve: You might be interested in following this link to a Ford conversion kit for the Monogram kit. I bought it and Ihave to agree with the review 100%. I haven't had the guts to attempt it yet. http://www.swannysmodels.com/FordNose.html Ken
