Mission 14 May 1943 to Antwerp - 10/17/2005 09:54:14 AM
On that date a diversion was carried out to the Ford and General Motor Works at Antwerp by 94 and 95 BG and one of the losses were the B-17 42-3115 which was shot down by 3 Fw 190's of JG 26.
Subsequently this plane crashed in flames in the "Oud-Noord-Bevelandpolder"some 800 meter south of Kats (a small village on the island of Noord-Beveland. The whole crew of 1Lt. James E.McKinley was killed and they were buried on 17 May at the northern cemetery at Flushing, five of them initially as unknown airmen.
I am looking for pictures of this crew and/or crewmembers and hope that someone may be able to help to complete the story.

Apart from that several B-17's were hit by AA fire and defending e/a. Is it possible to determin extent of damage to these planes and can they be identified?

Hi Wim,
I believe my mother's first husband was the bombadier on that plane. If I am correct, it was the only one lost on that particular mission. (John A. Payne 2nd LT.). 335th bomber squadron, 95th bomber group, from Framlingham, England. KIA 14-May-1943.  I was always told the plane went down in the North Sea, no survivors. I too am looking for any information I can find. How are you connected? You will find information on the above group, and a group photo here: www.95thbg.org .

Tim,

Project Bits and Pieces agrees with Wim's information about the crash site. Perhaps a copy of the MACR 4908 would give you some information the you haven't found before. A copy if free by contacting Lynn.Gamma@MAXWELL.AF.MIL  2Lt John A. Payne was the bombardier that day.

Vic Walzel, brother of 1st Lt Leland H. Walzel, bombardier with the 93rd Bomb Group, 330th Squadron. KIA 6 March 1944 on his 25th mission.

Thanks Vic, much appreciated! My mother was always told that his plane went down in the North Sea. I have since found out the FW-109 pilot who was credited with the "kill".
