Missing MACR? - 08/05/2008 01:37:19 AM
I have retrieved various MACR's of P-47 losses on July 30, 1943 in the Netherlands.

However, I can't find the MACR of 41-6248. Doesn't it exist and if not why not!

Thanks in advance.

Hi Ron,

Thanks, I know who the pilot was but I find it strange that there is no MACR, that's what's puzzling me.

I know they assumed it crashed in the sea, but there are people who tell different stories....

Snafu -
From Kent Miller's Book
Day to Day Operations 8th AF.
7/30/43 - Lt. Fred Merritt last seen in combat
with ME 109s SE of Rotterdam.
Some MACRs for early losses were written Post War
and begin at 15,000.
You could also request the IDPF under the
Freedom of Information Act.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for this information. I think the book you're mentioning is most interesting, will search for that right away!

I didn't know there were IDPF's written for MIA's, will try this right away! Too bad it will take such a long time to receive it....

You think that searching in the archives for MACR's starting from 15000 would help?

Hi,

Just my thoughts on there being No MACR for this a/c.

Perhaps it came down in an area that was at the time concidered to be in Allied hands and as with other a/c that came down in Allied areas there was no MACR.
But as this was in 1943 I also do wonder ?

Snafu -
It is a 2 Volume set by Kent Miller
Schiffer Books
" Fighter Pilots and Units of the 8th AF "
Vol. I - Day to Day Operations and Fighter Group Histories
Vol. II - Arial / Ground Victories and Ace Data
Excellent Reference,
Mike

Hmmm, looks like a treat to me. Have to save some money for this, since it will cost quite a bit to buy and ship these two books to the Netherlands....

Thanks for the info!

I have contact now with Merritt's relatives so I know a lot more about him now. What I'm searching for now is his radio callsign and a possible picture of his plane. Any ideas where I can find a list with radio callsigns?
