To all who replied, thank you very much for your input.
Susan - I have Speer's Debden Warbirds, it's a wonderful volume, but thank you for replying. FYI - He has a new book out. It's called One Down, One Dead.
Treize - Makes sense that picking up the pilot would negate the need for a MACR. I'm curious, how did the AAF account for the loss of the a/c then? Will have to delve deeper!
Mike - Tussey's name is listed on that site but the aircraft serial is not. I suspect it is for one or all three of the accidents in which Tussey was involved prior to his loss on operations on 11 May. Two of the accidents resulted in the loss of John Godfrey's P-51B's; the first on 06 April (43-6765) and the second on 26 April (42-106730). He was also involved in an accident on 02 May (43-6997).
Peter - Never did have the location mapped out, thanks for the translation of the coordinates (N-3108). My hope with any of the documentation regarding this loss is that the squadron code for the aircraft will be revealed. It does appear 43-24771 was Tussey's first (and only) personal a/c. Had he flown another for a period of time prior to the crash we might have been able to assume the code went with the new a/c, but no such luck! If I ultimately manage to get that info, will forward to you posthaste.
Again - thanks to all for taking your time to reply to my post - it's greatly appreciated.
