Missing Aircrew Information - 10/26/2007 07:03:06 PM
I have MACR 15490 which covers a loss on 1 December 1943 of the entire 9 man aircrew from the 308th Bomb Gp, 373 Bomb Sq.  This MACR has omitted the tail number of the aircraft and the only circumstances mentioned was "Lost over Burma/Rangoon by enemy fire".  Does anyone have any more on this loss, especially the tail number of the aircraft.  Names on this mission were:  Thanks in advance for any information

In the December 10, 1943 issue of the weekly magazine Roundup distributed in the CBI Theater, it says: "A large force of B-24's returned to the Insein locomotive shops and engine sheds Dec. 1 and stoked the fires again. Another formation started other fires at Akyab. Both formations were intercepted by groups of Jap fighters and knocked down 15 of them, probably destroying six more and damaging a large number".

No own losses are mentioned for Dec. 1st, at least in the magazine

Rangoon raids were also on 25, 27, and 28 Nov. 1943.

Major O'Brien apparently CO of 373rd BS at that time.  Bill McCavick was normally radio operator on B-24 "Daisy Mae", lost earlier on Haiphong mission on Sept. 15, 1943.
Nichols was the bombardier.

MSgt. Watkins...Major John T. Foster (USAF-retired) states in his book "China Up and Down:  The 308th Bombardment Group (Heavy) of The Flying Tigers:  The Men, The B-24s and The Events From 1943 to 1945" (p. 142) that the tail number of this aircraft was 41-24125..The plane's nickname was "Tail Heavy".  His notation for this aircraft was "..shot down 12/1/43 over Burma with Sqd. C.O. Maj. Paul O'Brien(P)(KIA)/Holliday(CP)(KIA),Nichols(KIA),Drake (KIA) et al.  Hope this helps. ...Gary Zaetz (nephew of 425th Bomb Squadron navigator 1st. Lt. Irwin Zaetz).

Thanks for all the information.  That is exactly what I needed to do a little more researching.
