McGovern's plane with the 751st number? - 02/24/2008 06:13:18 PM
Folks,  I'm new to this site and have found it VERY helpful in a number of ways.  Have a passion for McGovern's outfit since reading Wild Blue by Ambrose.  Do any of you know what McGovern's plane number was while he was flying...before he lost it on that tiny Island in the emergency landing?  His replacement aircraft number would also be much appreciated.
I'm making a couple models of the B24 and want to make them both of his planes.
Thanks in advance for you help.

Hi Rich,

McGovern may have been piloting “Stinky” when he landed on Vis:

I’ve never found a firm reference, but Stinky was salvaged on 20 Dec 44, and seems to fit the mission history and witness accounts.  The crew in the Best Web photo was with the 742nd, but that does not exclude the aircraft.  There are many examples of aircraft moving between 455th BG squadrons.

A good candidate for a model might be “Yo-Yo”

This was a well-known 741st BS aircraft, and is mentioned in Wild Blue as an aircraft that McGovern piloted.  There may be other 741st aircraft that were at San Giovanni Field when McGovern was there that might make a good subject.  I'll check around to see what I can find.

Dave:

Do you know serial number of the B-24 flown by McGovern's crew on December 17, 1944 (accident desribed in Ambrose's book)?

Regards,
Mike

Hi Mike,

No luck with that serial number.  Since he managed to safely land the aircraft with one main gear wheel up, the aircraft wasn't wrecked, and there doesn't appear to be a record.  There may be loading lists out there somewhere, but I haven't found them (not yet anyway).

Thank you.
