Mammy Yokum Squadron Original Planes 08/09/2005 09:12:50 AM (permalink)

I have identified the serial numbers for 19 planes that were reportedly assigned to the 817 Mammy Yokum Squadron when it first went to Italy in about March 1944.  I also have the names given to most of the planes, and the names of all but one of the pilots who flew the planes to Italy.  The info I have is as follows:

42-31998         Baraz Twins                                   John Gorman
42-32013         Old Man Mose                               Maurice Mott
42-32014         Pappy Yokum                                 William Nevins
42-32016         Named Swamp Gal by 99th BG   Jack Kent
42-32031         Mammy Yokum                              Millard Pedigo
42-32033         Rita Ann                                         John Hommel
42-32040         Turnip Termite                              Wilby Lee
42-32041                                                                Fred Wickham
42-32046         Li’l Abner                                      Henry Hogan
42-32063
42-32071         Moonbeam McSwine                     James Loughner
42-32075         Fearless Fosdick                           Hugh Rowe
42-32092         Miss Natural                                 William Lanford
42-32097         Sadie Hawkins                              Glen McSparran
42-38209         E’rthquake McGoon                     Don Maclin
42-38212                                                               Charles Hull
42-106990                                                             Richard Combs
42-106991                                                             James Crew
42-107000       Princess No No                             James Haley

I would be surprised if there hadn’t been a plane named Daisy Mae.  In the book “B-17 Flying Fortress Nose art Gallery” by John and Donna Campbell there is a photo of a camouflaged B-17G named Hairless Joe with the caption suggesting it was from the 91st BG, but the history book I have for that BG doesn’t include any reference to a plane with that name.  The copy of Foreman’s “B-17 Nose Art Name Directory” that I have doesn’t list either a Daisy Mae or a Hairless Joe for the 483rd BG, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t exist.  Can anyone fill in the gaps?

I was wondering if you could email me this information soalebm@muohio.edu. I do not want to get the names wrong and there seems to be some errors in the text. I'm researching "Rita Ann" and I'm also in contact with some of the surviving crewmembers
    Thanks,
    Brandon
