MACR need some additional tips - 08/21/2006 12:52:29 AM
Hi All,

It is late and I am running into a wall here and need some help - after checking the MACR DB and getting a close match to the MACR number I need I have run into a dead end.

Here is the info I have

BG = 100th
BS = 349th SQ
Date of Loss 11-05-1943
Pilot Lt. Flesh
A\C 230088 "SQUAWKIN HAWK"
MACR # ????

I thought there was a way to also search NARA but for the life of me I can not seem to find it... any help finding this MACR would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

John

Hello John

After a few unsuccessful tries...I finally accessed the 100th Bomb Group Casualty Report Database...typed in only the letter 'F' for pilot's last name, then clicked on 'Submit Query'...scan down the page to the 3rd MACR #99908, which refers to Pilot William Flesh. Yet ironically the small red print states that if MACR number is 99900-99999, then the casualty report did not have an associated MACR.

For further info...go back up to top of page and click on 'A/C Name'...type in 'Squawkin Hawk'...and the history of this bomber will appear.

Hello again...more on Pilot Wm. Flesh...is he friend/family or someone on the crew? It's sometimes not easy to retire the computer 'mouse' when on a roll with research...it can be contagious!

here's a link to photo & more info that I found interesting...thought you may also.

John,
According to the book "The B-17 Flying Fortress Story" written by Roger Freeman & David Osborne, 42-30088 'Squakin Hawk II' was not downed during the war.  The entry in this book states:

42-30088 Del Cheyenne 8/4/43; Kearney 16/4/43; Wendover 2/5/43; Hill 12/5/43; Wendover 18/5/43; Kearney 22/5/43; Dow Fd 27/5/43; ass 349BS/100BG [XR-E] Thorpes Abbotts 9/6/43; retUS 17/5/44; Hendricks 8/6/44; RFC Walnut Ridge 13/12/45.  First a/c in group to 50 missions. SQUAKIN HAWK II.

Mystery solved - I think.  MACR's weren't ordinarily done if a.) the aircraft returned to base, or b.) seen to ditch or crash outside enemy territory.

In this case Squawkin Hawk returned, with just the pilots Flesh and Gossage, after the crew bailed out near Gelsenkirchen.

Bill

Brewster's Chute did not open. He is at rest in the US but initially was laid to rest at a POW Cemetery at St. Trond a/f Belgium.
Details of this crew from "Losses of the US 8th & 9th Air Forceces ETO Area June 1942 - December 1943" by Bishop & Hey.

Perhaps she became "II" after repairs following this mission ?

You guys are SUPER!!!! Thanks for all the replies!!

I guess I was correct when I said it was LATE - I already knew that the plane made it back but most of the crew hit the silk.... I was on a mission for the MACR and wanted it so much I did not allow myself to make the mental connection with the return of the plane and the bailout of the crew.

Thanks again for all the help and the additional information posted.

I'm surprised there wasn't a MACR for the men who bailed out.  They are Missing Air Crew Reports, not missing aircraft reports.  There are other instances where part of a crew bailed out over enemy terratory but some of the crew stayed with the plane and made it back to base, and a MACR was generated.

Hi Everyone,
Glad to see our website and database is being put to such good use.  As stated above when an aircraft returned to base NO MACR was generated.  Only a casualty report would have been generated for Lt Flesh/Lt Gossage Crew who did not return.  Lt Flesh was quite the character.   He missed the Regensburg Mission and his Crew was shot down with a fill in Pilot (Lt Biddick) and on this mission he bails out all of Lt Sumner Reeder's enlisted men and  Group Navigator Lt Omar Gonzales.

This is a pretty old thread but I'm going to put my 2 cents worth in anyway.  Several posts in this thread state that MACRs were not issued when the aircraft was not lost.  Another member correctly points out that MACR stands for Missing Air Crew Report.  Under the old MACR database on this site it was not uncommon to see the remark 'aircraft not lost'.  Personally I have obtained several MACRs from Maxwell where the a/c returned to base minus one or more crewmen.  In the current thread a service like Footnote comes in handy because you can search by name.  Attached is page 1 of the MACR covering T/Sgt Conner Brewster.
